We’re happy to be working with The Black Ship Co. for their upcoming production of the new play “Pills.” Written by Michael DeVito and directed by Kellye Blosser, the play is about children, both realized and in theory. Max and Sally are pondering having children. In another world, a child of theirs exists. The play follows the stories of two couples and three conceptual people. Come out and support local, cutting edge theater for only $12.

Chicago Creative Expo @ Chicago Cultural Center

The Department of Cultural Affairs is presenting the ninth annual Chicago Creative Expo on Saturday, March 12. This free, day long event is ideal for any Chicago based artist. You can spend the day attending talks presented by experts in the field. If you’re interested in getting some feedback, you can have your portfolio looked over by art curators and gallery owners. If you’re wondering about how to get insurance as an artist you can attend a workshop covering that. With over 25 workshops and 130 vendors, there’s someone covering every aspect of life as an artist. If you’re interested in promotions, direction will have a booth at the expo and our very own Micah Taylor will be leading a workshop at 3pm entitled “Streetmarketing the Arts”.

With the Super Bowl being in Dallas this year, we are working with our friends at BMF Media organizing a massive product sample distribution in the Lone Star State. Starting on Thursday, our team in Dallas will be traveling to various locations in the city, distributing sample size boxes of Tide detergent. Chicago Architecture Foundation

Direction is happy to be working with the Chicago Architecture Foundation for the first time. This forty-five year old organization has been showcasing the wonders of the Loop on their world-renowned Loop walking tours and the beautiful buildings along the water on their Architecture River Cruise. The CAF is one of the reasons Chicago is a cultural destination. In addition to their Loop and River tours, the CAF also does special tours. Their “Skyscraper Walk through Time” takes place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. On February 20 they’ll be continuing their Family Program with “Engineering Extravaganza”. If you’re looking for an economical way to spend a day with the family, look to the Chicago Architecture Foundation.

Three Tall Women @ Court Theatre

Edward Albee (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”) wrote this very personal piece shortly after the passing of his step-mother. The play is about one human life, told through the performances of three different women. Woman A is on her deathbed, with a certain clarity that comes from the knowledge that time’s almost up. Woman B is middle-aged, in a marriage that’s bound to end and about to regain perspective. Woman C is twenty-six, working as a department store mannequin, going through boys until she finds the right one, she refuses to acknowledge she will ever turn into A. The play is directed by Court Theatre Artistic Director Charles Newell, whose 2004 production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” was named “the finest production I’ve seen to date” by Terry Teachout of the Wall Street Journal.

Eclipsed @ Northlight Theatre

“Eclipsed” makes its Chicagoland debut this month at the Northlight Theatre in Skokie. Writer Danai Gurira wrote a play about the people in war that often get overlooked, the civilian women. The piece is about five captive ‘wives’ of a rebel officer fighting in the last six weeks of the Liberian Civil War. Gurira went to Liberia in 2007 to do research and out of that experience this play was born. The small cast provides an intimate experience for all theatergoers.

Direction handled the distribution of promotional materials, hitting the Northshore and Northside of Chicago. Direction printworks handled the printing of posters.

Chicago History Museum in January

This January the Chicago History Museum is celebrating their eighth year of GLBT programming. From now until January 27 new members of the museum are eligible for a free ticket to each of the three special ‘Out’ events. For those that buy family plans two free tickets to each event are provided.

Sexicon: Language and Identity, January 27, will cover the usage of certain powerful words. In addition to this program there will be a cocktail hour. When Romeo Was a Woman, March 10, will be a study of Charlotte Cushman, the nineteenth century’s most famous cross-dressing and woman-loving actress. Beyond Shame: Life and Love in the 1950s, April 14, will cover a decade that wasn’t too kind to those in the GLBT community.

Black Creativity @ Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry is celebrating the 40th anniversary of their Black Creativity program. The museum ties in the program with exisiting exhibits, such as “Science Storms”, and for a month every year features special events. This year will include the Black Creativity 40th Anniversary Commemorative Gallery and Juried Art exhibition. The reception for this exhibit is February 9. Other planned programs include family days, the ‘cool jobs’ series and the Citizen Scientist Challenge. The programs and exhibit are featured until the end of February but special events take place throughout 2011.

Les Miserables @ Cadillac Palace Theatre

The classic musical “Les Miserables” is coming back to Chicago to celebrate the productions twenty-fifth anniversary. The performance has new staging and new scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. The current production has been to England and received raved reviews. The Guardian recently said “Les Misérables is a rousing, shamelessly entertaining evening of tuneful and spectacular popular theatre that saved the Royal Shakespeare Company from penury.”

The Great Summit @ Harris Theater

The Chicago Jazz Ensemble performs at the Harris Theater on January 20. Music director Dana Hall and special guest conductor Jon Faddis will lead the musicians in performances of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington numbers. Faddis will be returning to lead the ensemble after leaving this past May. Be sure you don’t miss out on this reunion and celebration.

The Trinity River Plays @ Goodman Theatre

Regina Taylor is about to debut her new play trilogy in Chicago this month at the Goodman. “Jar Fly”, “Rain” and “Ghoststory” tell the story of Iris Spears. “Jar Fly” covers her teen years and their lost innocence. “Rain” presents Iris as a 34-year old in a failing marriage who just wants to go back home. The final piece, “Ghoststory”, gives us Iris looking back and examining her life. The Dallas Morning News has called the trilogy, “sprawling, florid, earthy and abundantly alive.”

Do the Hustle @ Writers' Theatre

The world premier of Brett Neveu’s new play “Do the Hustle” opens later this month at The Writers’ Theatre. Father and son Sisson aren’t that close. Sam practically raised himself. Eddie feels like one final hustle could be their biggest take yet. Though their relationship isn’t very typical, neither want to be torn apart. Regardless of the outcome of the score, the real drama is whether or not this family stays together. This production is the second by Brett Neveu commissioned work by the Writers’ Theatre.

If you’re a fan of “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” you need to see “Burn the Floor“. Those TV shows are the Little League of Ballroom Dancing. “Burn the Floor” is the Major’s. The show is coming off a record-breaking Broadway run. It features twenty professional dancers covering over twelve different styles of dance. It’s a spectacle that is not to be missed.

Funk It Up About Nothin' @ Chicago Shakespeare Theater

Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” has been given a hip-hop reinterpretation by Chicago based The Q Brothers. The duo’s production has already won the Dress Circle Award for Best Musical Production at the legendary Edinburgh Fringe Festival. “Funk It Up About Nothin’” strives for authenticity, featuring a live DJ, B-boys and girls, MCs and divas. The romantic comedy is still there, it’s just been adapted for the masses. Make sure you see the musical while it’s still in Chicago. Once it closes it heads to Australia.

The Windy City Rollers begin their 2011 season with a return to the UIC Pavilion. Bout 1 of the season consists of two games, Hell’s Belles vs Manic Attackers and The Fury vs Double Crossers. Though it may not seem like it, the Windy City Rollers is fun for the entire family. I’m serious. Roller derby is an awesome sport and the bouts at the UIC Pavilion are age appropriate. It’s the only sport that both a five year old and fifteen year old would enjoy equally.

Fred Garbo's Inflatable Circus @ Moraine Valley Community College

Fred Garbo’s Inflatable Circus is a show that crosses boundaries of age, language and gender. It’s pleasing to the eye as long as you can see. It features inflatable objects. While that’s clear in the title alone, it’s not just balloons. Think of the bouncy house that are at children’s parties. Now put a man in the structure of that house. Now imagine that man as a flexible gymnast. That should give you an idea of what the bouncy house will turn into. It’s fun. Pure and simple, it will bring a smile to your face. Come see the production that has been featured on both “The Late Show with David Letterman” and at the Kennedy Center.

Dolly Parton’s hit film has been turned into a hit musical and it’s coming to Chicago. Direct from a successful run on Broadway, this new production has already won a Tony Award for best original song and a Grammy nominated score. Purchase tickets ASAP. The show will only be in town for a short while and it’s not to be missed. Variety has said the touring production is, “a light and lively crowdpleaser with a pronounced appeal to baby boomers.”

It’s that time of year, and we are excited to be part of the Disney Soccer Showcase in Orlando, FL once again! Action Marketing Group has put together a stellar series of activities for adidas during the Disney Soccer Showcase, including trying out the latest adiPURE IV soccer shoes in scrimages. In between and after the official games, players are welcome to hang out in the Chelsea’s Players lounge, where there will be foosball tables, flat screen TVs and sports massage therapists to administer massages to the athletes. The Wailers "The Uprising Tour" at House of Blues

Legendary reggae group The Wailers, along with Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds & Duane Stephenson are bringing “The Uprising Tour” to the House of Blues this January. They will be performing the last album they recorded with Bob Marley, “Uprising,” before his untimely passing. The group consists of original members and the album contains one of the most well-known Wailers songs, if not all of pop music, “Redemption Song.”

The direction staff has been hitting the hipster, hippie and other culturally interesting neighborhoods of Chicago with posters and fliers for this performance.

Traces @ Broadway Playhouse

“Traces” is the type of show that’s pretty difficult to summarize. It’s acrobatic but it’s far from the circus. It’s performance art but the production level is astonishingly high. It’s theater that anyone with a good set of eyes will appreciate. It’s been called “mesmeric, spontaneous and unpretentious,” by London’s “Metro.” 7 Fingers, a talented French Canadian company, created and toured this production around the world. The Chicago run has been extended until January 1 due to popular demand.

Laurie Anderson @ Harris Theater

Groundbreaking audio and visual artist Laurie Anderson returns to the Harris Theater to perform her new performance art piece, “Delusion,” commissioned by the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad and the Barbican Centre, London. Anderson is a one-of-a-kind artist and this production is no different. Jumping between short, mystery plays, the piece is about the everyday, the mythic, the fantastic and fact.

After getting to know their neighbor, the residents near Mr. Hatch lead more enriching lives, something that Facebook can’t promise. The musical is by the same man behind the successful, “The Emperor’s Groovy New Clothes.”

The 2010 Holiday Theatre Guide covers most productions in and around Chicago. The holiday tradition “It’s a Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play” returns to the Noble Fool Theater. Suitable for the entire family, this production is a great excuse to head out to see a show in Fox Valley. The Live Theater at Pheasant Run also has dinner packages available. “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” is currently playing in the Downstairs Theatre at the Steppenwolf. Chicago History Museum in December

A trip to the Chicago History Museum is always a good time. Whether you’re going to see temporary exhibits like “Facing Freedom” or “I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot”, you’re able to learn about important social issues to what to wear on the big day. There are also the permanent exhibits, like “Chicago: Crossroads of America,” which features a classic CTA train. The CHM also programs wonderful events every month. December has Sacred Spaces on December 4, Deck the Pubs! Christmas Caroling on December 9, a “Devil in the White City” bus tour on December 11, holiday themed films every weekend and much more.

Come and enjoy the story of two bachelors that live double lives in order to avoid responsibility and enjoy the nightlife, both trying to maintain appearances once loves comes into play.

The department store Santa, the real Kris Kringle, doubting parents and a Sally that wants to believe. We all know the story and there’s a good reason for that, it’s the perfect piece to lift the spirits. If you don’t believe me, just think of a child tugging on Santa’s beard.

The personality will perform the Chicago premier of his critically-acclaimed one man show, “A John Waters Christmas”. The New York Post has said the production, “Puts the “X back in X-Mas” and would you expect anything else? Don’t miss what the holidays are like from the mind that brought you “Pink Flamingos”, “Cry-Baby” and “Hairspray”.

The story that any Christmas movie lover knows, “White Christmas” is finally getting the stage show it deserves. Direct from Broadway, this new Irving Berlin musical includes all the tunes that made it famous, like “How Deep is the Ocean?” “Sisters,” “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep,” and the song that’s inevitably stuck in your head and you’re probably humming now, “White Christmas”.

“A Holiday Fantasea” begins this week at Shedd Aquarium. The show features Pacific white-sided dolphins, beluga whales and a California sea lion highlighting their beauty and natural behaviors. In addition to seeing an array of exotic animals, you’ll also be treated to performances from them accompanied by holiday music and festive backgrounds from around the world.

We’re very excited to be working with the John G. Shedd Aquarium for this show. We have teams scheduled to be promoting at multiple holiday themed events. Chamber Opera Chicago is bringing back their annual production of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” to the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium. One of the most popular operas of all-time, the story of a crippled, young shepherds child is the kind of art that stays true to the holiday spirit. What’s intriguing about these shows is that they will be directed by Francis Menotti. Mr. Menotti is the son of the composer of the production and will basing his on the original 1951 production.

The Ensemble Espanol Center will bring Dame Libby’s masterpiece “Bolero” to the Harris Theater this week as part of Global Rhythms VI and the Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s 20th anniversary. The premier Spanish dance company is a new client of ours and we’re proud to be working with them. Since 1976 they’ve been sharing the cultural traditions of Spain and now we’re spreading their word.

The highly successful, long running, award winning show “Wicked” returns for a short Chicago run. The Chicago Tribune called the show “Chicago’s musical phenomenon.” It would be hard to disagree. The show was extended and extended into a three and a half year run, making it the longest Chicago’s longest running Broadway musical.
