A Catered Affair @ Stage 773

Porchlight Music Theater is debuting another musical in Chicago later this month with “A Catered Affair.” Based on the Bette Davis film, the story of a bride to be and her wedding is becoming an American tale. A couple has to decide whether to spend their family savings on their daughter’s wedding or to save the family business. As prevalent as it was in 1950s, this new musical is a true family dramedy.

The direction staff has been handling distribution of promotional materials throughout the north side of Chicago. Direction printworks handled the production of promotional materials.

Afro-Beats! @ Harris Theatre

The Harris Theatre is celebrating Black History Month with Afro-Beats!, an afternoon performance that’s suitable for the entire family. Not just a sit down show, the event will allow children to participate in drum circles, traditional African dances and singing songs. Part of the Fulcrum Point New Music Project, the show will cover the rhythms, sounds and sights of West Africa in a 75-minute multi-platform performance.

The Convert @ Goodman Theatre

Being forced to choose between family and god isn’t new. Set in 1895 southern Africa, “The Convert,” an upcoming work at the Goodman, tells the story of Jekesai, a young woman who has escaped a forced marriage thanks to a man of Christianity. This leads her to becoming the Christian’s protege, something that puts her at odds with her family. When an anti-colonialism uprising brews, she’s forced to choose between the two sides.

The direction team has been distributing posters and handbills, produced in house, throughout Edgewater, Rogers Park and Uptown with a focus on Chicago’s African population.

Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting @ Lookingglass Theatre

A week before Major League Baseball’s opening day 1947, general manager for the Brooklyn Dodgers Branch Rickey plans on calling up Jackie Robinson and breaking baseball’s color barrier. Before introducing the superstar to the Major’s, a meeting with Jackie Robinson, boxer Joe Louis, entertainer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, actor and activist Paul Robeson and Rickey took place. This play, based on that meeting, has been receiving rave reviews. The Chicago Tribune gave the production a three and a half star review and said it’s a, “terrific new show.”

The direction staff has been pleased to distribute handbills and hang posters for this play throughout the north and south sides of Chicago as well as north shore suburbs. Direction printworks handled the printing of the posters.

Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak @ Dance Center

Molly Shanahan is debuting her new work “The Delicate Hour” late next month at the Columbia College Dance Center. This piece explores habit in movement with an ensembles of dancers practiciting sensual, personal and organic gestures. The project is three years in the making, ensuring that each move has been well thought out, regardless of how spontaneous it may seem.

The direction staff has been handling poster distribution throughout the Loop and north side of Chicago. Direction printworks handled the production of the materials.

Sirens @ Citadel Theatre

A loving husband, Sam, wrote a loving song for his wife, Rose. 25 years later, they’re still living off the residuals from that one hit. 25 years later, Sam feels stuck in the mud. He’s hit a creative wall and begins to look for a new muse on Facebook. Rose decides to surprise her husband with an anniversary trip to the Greek Islands. When the Sirens of the Islands begin to lure Sam, the choice between jumping into the sea and jumping in bed with his wife becomes the dilemma. This romantic comedy was a hit at the 2010 Humana Festival of New American Plays and is being staged for its first Midwest run.

November @ Chicago History Museum

Chicago is known as the home of Al Capone. It’s actually not dangerous, especially in places Capone used to frequent. It seems pointless to fight the town’s unwarranted reputation. Rather than try to convince folks that the city hasn’t been run by gangsters in forever, you might as well brush up on the history of crime in Chicago. The CHM is in the midst of their Crime in Chicago seminar. The next week includes a bus tour, walking tour, pub crawl, film screening and a lecture about the history of street gangs in Chicago. Whether you want to imbibe while learning, sit back and see the sights, walk the grounds of the old World’s Fair or listen to Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Illinois John M. Hagedorn talk about the the origin of today’s gangs, there’s a level of education for you.

Beauty of the Father @ The Wicker Park Art Center

The US premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz’s play, “Beauty of the Father” is coming to Wicker Park this month. A young American woman travels to Spain to meet her estranged father. When she becomes romantically attached to her father’s companion, a bizarre love triangle becomes a bit of an understatement.

Direction is pleased to be working with the Urban Theatre Company for the first time. We’ve been spreading posters and handbills in Wicker Park, Humboldt Park, Ukrainian Village and other neighborhoods on the Blue Line for this newly relocated show. Direction printworks handled the production of promotional materials.

Hubbard Street Dance Fall Series @ Harris Theater

The three programs that make up the 2011 Hubbard Street Dance Fall Series include a madcap comedy, the only U.S. company to ever perform a work from Nacho Duato and the world premiere of a new work from Twyla Tharp. The dance legend is debuting this work for the Hubbard for only four days in October.

We’ve been taking out materials for these Allied Live produced events throughout Chicago and on our specialty dance route. Direction printworks handled the production of materials for this new client.

The Real Thing @ Writers' Theatre

Anyone that’s ever tried their hand at theater, writing, film making, song writing, poetry, etc., knows the dillemma of bringing your personal life into your art. There’s a fine line between health and insanity. “The Real Thing,” by Tom Stoppard, is about a playwright watching his real life fall apart. Though heavy, it is funny and the play has won multiple awards. This modern classic opens in a few weeks at the Writers’ Theatre.

You don’t have to travel downtown to see world class opera. Chamber Opera Chicago is staging a new musical adaptation of the beloved Jane Austen work “Persuasion.” An original adaptation by Barbara Landis, this premier will feature songs from the Austen manuscript and other music of the period. The fully staged production is pulling out all the stops and will also feature an orchestra. Whether you’re in an English 101 course or a long time lover of Austen, this is an excellent opportunity to check out a beloved story in a brand new setting.

October is almost here and it’s time to get into the Halloween mood. The Citadel Theatre Company will be staging “Wait Until Dark,” a classic thriller by Frederick Knott. This Broadway hit tells the story of a mysterious doll terrorizing a blind woman. Nothing says scary like creepy inanimate objects torturing everyday people.

Brian Culbertson is currently touring on the release of his most recent album, “XII.” The album, the R&B/jazz multi-instrumentalist’s twelfth, features a wide array of guest vocalists and styles. Ranging in styles from Go-Go to Chicago Stepping, the album is an excellent, ambitious project. Brian’s Chicago stop is a homecoming of sorts, the talented musician is a graduate of DePaul’s School of Music.

Direction is happy to be doing some street promotion and printing production for One Eleven Production. We’ve taken posters and handbills on our south side routes and have done some hand to hand promotions at concerts by R. Kelly, Earth, Wind, and Fire and more.

Dave Matthews Band Caravan

The inaugural Dave Matthews Band Caravan is hitting four cities this summer and Chicago is the location for the Midwest stop. This three day festival features headlining sets from DMB each night in addition to an eclectic mix of jam bands, soul, jazz, blues, country, southern rock, hip-hop and other acts. If you’re thinking this fest is just for the diehards, it is, but it’s also for the fringe fan. Look at Sunday’s lineup if you don’t believe me. Emmylou Harris, The Flaming Lips, Gomez, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and The Jayhawks will be sharing a bill with DMB and five other acts. Whether or not you like Dave Matthews is pretty much irrelevant with a bill that solid.

Everyone’s favorite stand up in the Parks Department, Aziz Ansari is coming to Waukegan for a completely new hour of stand up. Fresh off the heels from the uber-successful CD/DVD “Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening,” Ansari is currently on the “Dangerously Delicious Tour,” featuring completely new material. An hour of new material from one of the hottest stand ups in a beautiful theatre.

Dispatch is kicking off their 2011 summer tour next week and has a stop in Chicago on June 7. This veteran band is donating a portion of every ticket sold to Amplifying Education, a program that music educational programs throughout the U.S. The band is also asking fans to bring a book to the venue to help restock the New Orleans’ Recovery School District libraries.

The direction team has been distributing posters and handbills to Chicago college campuses. We’ve also done some show hits outside of EOTO, Death Cab for Cutie, Ozomatli and Brett Dennen. Direction printworks handled printing for all promotional materials.

Chamber Opera Chicago is staging the classic Rodgers and Hammerstain musical, “The Sound of Music,” on June 11 and 12 at the Athenaeum Theatre in Lakeview. The classic heartwarming love story based upon the memoirs of Maria von Trapp is suitable for all ages. This staging will include a full orchestra and features Barbara Landis and Nick Sandys.

Opening Day @ Arlington Park

Spring is here. Racing season is about to begin. Arlington Park starts their season this weekend. The first race is tomorrow at 3pm and admission is free. Saturday is Derby Day at the park, the Chicago areas largest Kentucky Derby party and Mother’s Day will feature special deals for mom and the rest of the family. Whether you’re interested in horse racing or just want to spend a day in the park, Arlington is a great place to get out of the city.

Soul Samurai @ Theater Wit

Direction is happy to be working with InFusion Theatre Company for the first time. The Chicago based theatre company presents the Midwest premiere of “Soul Samurai” tonight. The production is about a young, female samurai and her sidekick in a post-apocalyptic New York City. With martial arts, a DJ mixing music live, multi-media production, hip-hop and vampires, “Soul Samurai” is not the usual theater experience.

FRS Energy Lakefront Run

FRS is launching their Healthy Energy products this week. FRS is lead by Lance Armstrong and is a healthy alternative to sugary and caffeinated energy products. To help celebrate the release of FRS, the drink is sponsoring a Lakefront Run this weekend. All donations received at the run benefit LiveStrong and Road Scholars. Registration for the race isn’t necesary. Just show up, preferably in yellow, and donate $5 to support the charities.

Direction is happy to be working with BMF Media in promoting this new drink and run. Direction printworks handled the printing of the posters and fliers for this event. We’ve been distributing them on our gym, yoga, sports and healthy living specialty routes. In addition to our retail routes, we’ve also been promoting the run hand to hand at other races and on college campuses.

The 2002 Tony Award-winning Best Play “The Goat or, Who is Sylvia?” opens in previews tonight at Greenhouse Theatre. This Remy Buppo Theatre Company production is written by Edward Albee and directed by James Bohnen, asks the question, how far you will you go for the husband you thought you knew?

Miles Davis Festival @ Auditorium Theatre

To celebrate the 85th Birthday of Miles Davis the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University presents the Miles Davis Festival. The Fest includes three auditorium concerts and over 16 jazz club shows. One of the highlights of the festival include Sketches of Blue: An Orbert Davis Tribute to Miles on April 14 at the Auditorium Theatre. Even if you can’t attend of the performances you can still participate in the fest. The Auditorium Theatre is collecting used CDs, sheet music, scores, music history books and albums. All donations will go to CPS schools looking to expand and grow their music programs.

In addition to their excellent exhibits, the museum regularly executes special events. Monthly history pub crawls, Sunday documentaries, and multiple types of tours ensure that there’s always something to learn about the city you call home.

Sense & Sensibility @ Northlight Theatre

Jane Austin’s first book was published in 1811 and it’s still being interpreted today. The classic work “Sense & Sensibility” is currently in production at the Northlight Theatre. This new adaptation by Jon Jory tells the story of a pair of sisters that aren’t too alike. The duo is looking for marriage and it’s not going well. With a lack of family funds, the Dashwood sisters discover what it takes to find love.

The Warriors @ The New Colony

“The Warriors,” not the movie and video game with the street gangs and makeup, opens tomorrow at The New Colony in Lakeview. The story of an actress that survives a school shooting at the age of twelve, this “The Warriors” is based on a true story and actually impacts real human lives. In 1998 at Westside Middle School, on the outskirts of Jonesboro, Arkansas, an eleven year old killed four students, a teacher and injured ten more. Mary Hollis Inboden survived that shooting. A member of The New Colony, Mary is bringing this original and honest play about what it’s like to live through tragedy.

Presented by Navy Pier in partnership with Africa International House and the Chicago Commission On Human Relations, the event is all-ages, free and family friendly. Rhythms, Chicago Steppers, Khalidah’s North African Dance Experience, Joan Collaso & the Larry Hanks Trio, and the Dahnyeekah African Dance Troupe.

Neil LaBute’s new plays is making it’s Chicago debut at the Profiles Theatre. A story about how a flippant comment can spiral into debates about beauty, loyalty and infidelity, “reasons to be pretty” is a modern, universal story. The Chicago Tribune said, “this cautionary tale not only offers more schandefreude than any other 90 minutes in town, but also has the authentic whiff of a writer who loves probing the reasons to be pretty and the dangers of bringing it up in conversation.” If you’re not a fan of Valentine’s Day and feel like it’s time to look past the superficial, this play may be what you’re looking for.

Jailbait @ The Second Stage

After a highly successful Chicago run that was already extended seven weeks, Profiles Theatre “Jailbait” is returning, this time to a new space in Lakeview. Two thirty-something males spend a night at a club, one trying to get over a breakup and one thinking this is the way to do it. Two high school sophomores want to meet older men and head to the club with some fake IDs. Questions of adulthood, legality and intent are all posed. The play has received positive press from the Chicago Sun-Times, New City and more.

The direction staff is handling the distribution of materials for this second run of the play and direction printworks handled the production of those materials.

Pilobolus @ Harris Theater

The ground-breaking dance troupe Pilobolus is coming to Chicago for only two performances. The gymnasts/dancers work together to form intricate objects. It sounds simple. It’s not. They’re currently celebrating their fortieth year of jaw-dropping feats. They’ve received glowing reviews from The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and more.

A Doll's House @ The Greenhouse Theater

The Infamous Commonwealth Theatre continues their 2010-11 season with “A Doll’s House”. This play, along with the others they’ve produced this year, is about sacrifice. Originally by Henrik Ibsen and adapted by Christopher Hampton, this production is about Nora Helmer, a woman defined by others. She’s managed to build a successful life by others standards. She lives in a beautiful home with a loving husband and children. When a secret from her past is unearthed Nora has to face the realities rather than the constructs.

Direction has handled the distribution and printing of posters and handbills for this production throughout the north side of Chicago.

Eclipsed @ Northlight Theatre

“Eclipsed” makes its Chicagoland debut this month at the Northlight Theatre in Skokie. Writer Danai Gurira wrote a play about the people in war that often get overlooked, the civilian women. The piece is about five captive ‘wives’ of a rebel officer fighting in the last six weeks of the Liberian Civil War. Gurira went to Liberia in 2007 to do research and out of that experience this play was born. The small cast provides an intimate experience for all theatergoers.

Direction handled the distribution of promotional materials, hitting the Northshore and Northside of Chicago. Direction printworks handled the printing of posters.

The Trinity River Plays @ Goodman Theatre

Regina Taylor is about to debut her new play trilogy in Chicago this month at the Goodman. “Jar Fly”, “Rain” and “Ghoststory” tell the story of Iris Spears. “Jar Fly” covers her teen years and their lost innocence. “Rain” presents Iris as a 34-year old in a failing marriage who just wants to go back home. The final piece, “Ghoststory”, gives us Iris looking back and examining her life. The Dallas Morning News has called the trilogy, “sprawling, florid, earthy and abundantly alive.”

Direction and direction printworks is handling both the printing and distribution of promotional materials for The Trinity River Plays.

Laurie Anderson @ Harris Theater

Groundbreaking audio and visual artist Laurie Anderson returns to the Harris Theater to perform her new performance art piece, “Delusion,” commissioned by the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad and the Barbican Centre, London. Anderson is a one-of-a-kind artist and this production is no different. Jumping between short, mystery plays, the piece is about the everyday, the mythic, the fantastic and fact.

The direction staff has been distributing materials to the more artistic communities in Chicago, including Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, West Town and more, to raise awareness for this special event. Direction printworks handled the production of all promotional materials.

Chicago History Museum in December

A trip to the Chicago History Museum is always a good time. Whether you’re going to see temporary exhibits like “Facing Freedom” or “I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot”, you’re able to learn about important social issues to what to wear on the big day. There are also the permanent exhibits, like “Chicago: Crossroads of America,” which features a classic CTA train. The CHM also programs wonderful events every month. December has Sacred Spaces on December 4, Deck the Pubs! Christmas Caroling on December 9, a “Devil in the White City” bus tour on December 11, holiday themed films every weekend and much more.

Everyone’s favorite Baltimore bred cult director John Waters is coming to the Harris Theater for one night only. The personality will perform the Chicago premier of his critically-acclaimed one man show, “A John Waters Christmas”. The New York Post has said the production, “Puts the “X back in X-Mas” and would you expect anything else? Don’t miss what the holidays are like from the mind that brought you “Pink Flamingos”, “Cry-Baby” and “Hairspray”.

Chamber Opera Chicago is bringing back their annual production of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” to the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium. One of the most popular operas of all-time, the story of a crippled, young shepherds child is the kind of art that stays true to the holiday spirit. What’s intriguing about these shows is that they will be directed by Francis Menotti. Mr. Menotti is the son of the composer of the production and will basing his on the original 1951 production.

We’re happy to be working with Chamber Opera Chicago again. In addition to street distribution we also handled the printing of promotional materials.

Chemically Imbalanced Comedy is about to unleash its holiday themed production of the year. Broadening horizons, the company is bringing us Sinterklass, the Dutch version of Santa Clause. Just like the Santa we’ve grown to love, he also has elves. One of them is named Zwarte Piet. These two spread holiday cheer, leaving fruit in the shoes of good boys and girls. Unlike our Santa and elves, these two beat and kidnap the bad kids. This world premier was written by Marz Timms and Angie McMahon and will be directed by Josie Dykas.

The annual tradition “A Christmas Carol” returns to the Goodman Theatre this year with a brand new Ebenezer Scrooge. Chicago’s own John Judd will play the role of the classic curmudgeon. Director William Brown returns for his fourth year. The production has been performed annually for over thirty years. It’s a show in which the Chicago Tribune said “magic took over the show.”

Come one, come all, to the highly anticipated holiday spectacular Chicago has grown to love, “David Bowie’s Christmas Special 1977,” produced by the New Millennium Theatre Company! Actually, let’s give the production the credit it deserves. The entire title of the performance is “The David Bowie Hepzikat Velvet Flarney Solstice Spectacular…Live From Space! (David Bowie’s Christmas Special 1977 (network edit)”. That’s much better.

Celebrate the season with Mick Jagger, Annie Lennox, Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithfull, Paul Lynde, Charo, Freddy Mercury and the man of the hour, David Bowie aka Ziggy Stardust. The production is doing one last victory lap before retiring to space.

If you want to get into the action ASAP, come support by joining the David Bowie Glam Rock Pub Crawl on November 13. Travel the Lakeview neighborhood, sample its finest of wines and then watch a performance that will invigorate the holiday spirit.

“Kid Sister” is having its world premiere at the Profiles Theatre this fall. Demi Williams is a seductive 19-year old single mom and “American Idol” wannabe. The one thing that stands between her dream and her reality is her stalker ex-boyfriend. Demi solicits the help of her ex-con brother Cassius. The one thing that Cassius wants is custody of Demi’s newborn. Tis the season for family drama.

The play was penned by Will Kern, the writer of the “Hellcab,” one of the longest running plays in Chicago theater history. “Kid Sister” is the first script to become a full-fledged production in the theaters twenty-two years.

The nation is in ruins. Sides are drawn. An Illinois politician and his wife are spending Christmas Eve as President and First Lady in the White House. It’s 1864.

“A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration” was penned by Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel. Directed by Henry Godinez, this holiday themed production weaves fiction and reality with traditional Christmas carols. Mrs. Lincoln scours Washington for the ideal Christmas tree while a mother searches for her daughter.

New Orleans Now @ Harris Theater

The Chicago Jazz Ensemble is honoring one of America’s musical centers, New Orleans, with a performance at the Harris Theater on November 18. Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, “The King of Nouveau Swing” saxophonist Donald Harrison and eight-time W.C. Handy award winner pianist Henry Butler will perform contemporary interpretations of songs from legendary New Orleans musicians. Numbers written by Louis Prima, King Oliver, Duke Ellington and more will be interpreted.
