Ghetto Klown 2012 U.S. Tour

After work-shopping his newest one man show at the Royal George in Lincoln Park before bringing it to New York and L.A., John Leguizamo is now taking it south. The show has garnered positive press from The Huffington Post, New York Times, L.A. Times and more. The good folks over at WestBeth Entertainment are bringing “Ghetto Klown” throughout Texas and Florida in February and March.

The direction staff has set up special promotional events in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. We’ve also been distributing posters and handbills on specialty hipster, Latino, comedy and Broadway routes.

“Ghetto Klown” will begin its 2012 tour in Austin and end in Miami, with stops along the way. Tickets are available for all the shows and can be found at westbethent.com.

Winter WonderLoop

You don’t have to head to the suburbs to take advantage of Black Friday deals. You don’t have to camp out on Michigan Avenue to see the holiday lights. Chicago Dancing Festival @ Millennium Park

The company is in the midst of the Chicago Dancing Festival. It wraps this Saturday with a free performance open to the public. Brian Culbertson is currently touring on the release of his most recent album, “XII.” The album, the R&B/jazz multi-instrumentalist’s twelfth, features a wide array of guest vocalists and styles. Ranging in styles from Go-Go to Chicago Stepping, the album is an excellent, ambitious project. Brian’s Chicago stop is a homecoming of sorts, the talented musician is a graduate of DePaul’s School of Music.

Direction is happy to be doing some street promotion and printing production for One Eleven Production. We’ve taken posters and handbills on our south side routes and have done some hand to hand promotions at concerts by R. Kelly, Earth, Wind, and Fire and more.

We’re happy to be working with The Black Ship Co. for their upcoming production of the new play “Pills.” Written by Michael DeVito and directed by Kellye Blosser, the play is about children, both realized and in theory. Max and Sally are pondering having children. In another world, a child of theirs exists. The play follows the stories of two couples and three conceptual people. Adult Classes @ Old Town School of Folk Music

How many people say they’re going to pick up a new instrument as a New Year’s resolution? They buy a guitar, fiddle with it once or twice, find out that it requires time, patience and practice to play it well, put it in the corner and never touch it again. Lucky for me, I have a lot of friends like that and have inherited a plethora of resolution instruments. Now I need to learn how to play them. Enter the Old Town School of Folk Music. Registration for spring classes is currently open and sessions begin April 25. The OTSFM is one of the most well-respected and musically diverse places to learn how to play pretty much any instrument. Whether you’re a beginner or old pro, there’s something for you.

FRS Energy Lakefront Run

FRS is launching their Healthy Energy products this week. FRS is lead by Lance Armstrong and is a healthy alternative to sugary and caffeinated energy products. To help celebrate the release of FRS, the drink is sponsoring a Lakefront Run this weekend. All donations received at the run benefit LiveStrong and Road Scholars. Registration for the race isn’t necesary. Just show up, preferably in yellow, and donate $5 to support the charities.

Direction is happy to be working with BMF Media in promoting this new drink and run. Direction printworks handled the printing of the posters and fliers for this event. We’ve been distributing them on our gym, yoga, sports and healthy living specialty routes. In addition to our retail routes, we’ve also been promoting the run hand to hand at other races and on college campuses.

Groundbreaking audio and visual artist Laurie Anderson returns to the Harris Theater to perform her new performance art piece, “Delusion,” commissioned by the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad and the Barbican Centre, London. Anderson is a one-of-a-kind artist and this production is no different. Jumping between short, mystery plays, the piece is about the everyday, the mythic, the fantastic and fact.

Everyone’s favorite Baltimore bred cult director John Waters is coming to the Harris Theater for one night only. The personality will perform the Chicago premier of his critically-acclaimed one man show, “A John Waters Christmas”. The New York Post has said the production, “Puts the “X back in X-Mas” and would you expect anything else? Don’t miss what the holidays are like from the mind that brought you “Pink Flamingos”, “Cry-Baby” and “Hairspray”.

The story that any Christmas movie lover knows, “White Christmas” is finally getting the stage show it deserves. Direct from Broadway, this new Irving Berlin musical includes all the tunes that made it famous, like “How Deep is the Ocean?” “Sisters,” “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep,” and the song that’s inevitably stuck in your head and you’re probably humming now, “White Christmas”.

Spreading the tuneful cheer, direction has been all over this soon to be snow covered city with materials for this new musical.

A Holiday Fantasea @ Shedd Aquarium

“A Holiday Fantasea” begins this week at Shedd Aquarium. The show features Pacific white-sided dolphins, beluga whales and a California sea lion highlighting their beauty and natural behaviors. In addition to seeing an array of exotic animals, you’ll also be treated to performances from them accompanied by holiday music and festive backgrounds from around the world.

We’re very excited to be working with the John G. Shedd Aquarium for this show. We have teams scheduled to be promoting at multiple holiday themed events. We’ve already been at the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. Coming up is the Thanksgiving Day parade, Toys for Tots Parades, and an event each weekend leading up to Christmas. The Ensemble Espanol Center will bring Dame Libby’s masterpiece “Bolero” to the Harris Theater this week as part of Global Rhythms VI and the Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s 20th anniversary. The premier Spanish dance company is a new client of ours and we’re proud to be working with them. Since 1976 they’ve been sharing the cultural traditions of Spain and now we’re spreading their word.

The first concert series in the United States spotlighting American tap and contemporary percussion arts companies, Global Rhythms comes to the Harris Theater at the end of the month. The Chicago Human Rhythm Project ends their 2010 year with a performance that shares 50% of its proceeds with more than 50 Chicago area non-profits. Thanks to the Thanks4Giving program a night out on the town will do more good than ever before.

The Chicago Loop is about to transform into a winter wonderland again. Beginning today and lasting until the new year, the cultural attractions and businesses in downtown Chicago are featuring special events like tree lightings and story time hours to large scale sales. Visit the Christkindl Market, which features German and international vendors showcasing artisan crafts and food, at the Daley Center. Stroll down State St. and look at the annual Macy’s Holiday Windows. Come to the Tree Lighting on November 24. Come one, come all, to the highly anticipated holiday spectacular Chicago has grown to love, “David Bowie’s Christmas Special 1977,” produced by the New Millennium Theatre Company! Actually, let’s give the production the credit it deserves. The entire title of the performance is “The David Bowie Hepzikat Velvet Flarney Solstice Spectacular…Live From Space! (David Bowie’s Christmas Special 1977 (network edit)”. That’s much better.

Celebrate the season with Mick Jagger, Annie Lennox, Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithfull, Paul Lynde, Charo, Freddy Mercury and the man of the hour, David Bowie aka Ziggy Stardust. The production is doing one last victory lap before retiring to space.

“Kid Sister” is having its world premiere at the Profiles Theatre this fall. Demi Williams is a seductive 19-year old single mom and “American Idol” wannabe. The one thing that stands between her dream and her reality is her stalker ex-boyfriend. Demi solicits the help of her ex-con brother Cassius. The one thing that Cassius wants is custody of Demi’s newborn. Tis the season for family drama.

The play was penned by Will Kern, the writer of the “Hellcab,” one of the longest running plays in Chicago theater history. “Kid Sister” is the first script to become a full-fledged production in the theaters twenty-two years.

A Civil War Christmas @ Northlight Theatre

The nation is in ruins. Sides are drawn. An Illinois politician and his wife are spending Christmas Eve as President and First Lady in the White House. It’s 1864.

“A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration” was penned by Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel. Directed by Henry Godinez, this holiday themed production weaves fiction and reality with traditional Christmas carols. Mrs. Lincoln scours Washington for the ideal Christmas tree while a mother searches for her daughter.

In addition to distritubing materials throughout the northern suburbs and northern part of Chicago, direction has also printed posters for this production.

Everyone’s favorite boy fighter turned ballerina in war-town Ireland is closing up show at the Oriental Theatre. “Billy Elliot” ends its successful Broadway in Chicago run just after Thanksgiving on November 28. The 2009 Tony Award winner for Best Musical (which for those of you who don’t follow theater means it’s the best show on the biggest stage in the world) is perfect for the entire family. There may be no better way to celebrate the holiday season.

New Orleans Now @ Harris Theater

The Chicago Jazz Ensemble is honoring one of America’s musical centers, New Orleans, with a performance at the Harris Theater on November 18. Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, “The King of Nouveau Swing” saxophonist Donald Harrison and eight-time W.C. Handy award winner pianist Henry Butler will perform contemporary interpretations of songs from legendary New Orleans musicians. Numbers written by Louis Prima, King Oliver, Duke Ellington and more will be interpreted.

Bee is a young woman who believes she has the uncanny ability to see the future, and maybe even alter it. With the click of a television remote, we loop through time in this dark, funny world premiere about a woman bent on reinventing her own destiny, and possibly, the world.

Come to the MCA for free live jazz concerts every Tuesday during the summer, at Tuesdays on the Terrace, presented by Macy’s. I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot @ Chicago History Museum

For centuries, wedding fashion followed everyday fashion. Only recently have brides chosen to eschew contemporary formal wear for styles that directly reference the past. Today, hoop skirts, corsets, sinewy fishtails, long trains, and leg-o-mutton sleeves can all be seen on the aisle, but each style echoes decades past. The Chicago History Museum’s vast costume collection includes a stunning array of wedding attire—for brides, grooms, bridesmaids, and more—that reveals 150 years of fashion favored by Chicago couples. I Do! presents forty-five dresses, plus accessories, corsets, and men’s attire.

In addition to distributing materials throughout the city, we’ll also be passing out handbills at Chicago Bridal Expo events. Be sure to check out the exhibit this summer!

A Man’s Diary, is a true story of love, happiness, heartache and pain. A naked look at one man’s pursuit of love from the good to the bad to the psychotic. Written and directed by award winning platinum artist and producer Lil Louis, Based on the critically acclaimed book A Man’s Diary, the play bravely takes the audience on one man’s entire love journey from the most romantic, innocent and funniest moments, to the worst, most painful and embarrassing moments imaginable.

We were excited to be working to promote this production by one of the biggest names in house music. A Man’s Diary was only here for one day, so keep an eye out for its next performance!

For the past two weeks direction has been working with our good friends at Mirrorball to bring The Lost Art of Cinco to bars and venues throughout the Chicagoland area. We’ve been having a lot of fun leading these activations and coordinating the logistics for the Aztec Goddess of Cinco as she represents her tribe in celebration of Cinco de Mayo and Dos XX. The Aztec inspired promotion is travelling from bar to bar to ‘open the skies’ for the celebration of Cinco de Mayo with spiritual dancing and drumming.

Come Celebrate Cinco de Mayo and visit the Goddess and her maidens TONIGHT at Cactus, Tilted Kilt, Bull & Bear, and The Boundary. We’ll be making our stops starting at 5:30PM and will continue through the evening. Don’t forget to ask one of our maidens for your own complimentary Dos Equis!

Both on separate tours, Ozomatli and Steel Pulse will be making their way to the House of Blues in Chicago in May. Currently promoting their new album Fire Away (which comes out on April 20th), Ozomatli are tearing up the road and venue circuit with their unique blend of Latin, Jazz, Hip Hop, and funk. Steel Pulse, who are touring with Toots and the Mytals, are rocking venues across the country with their stone cold reggae grooves.

We’re working with our buddies at House of Blues, promoting both of these exciting acts. We’ll be turning up at concerts in Chicago distributing double sided handbills which advertise both shows. Be sure to grab one, and say hi!

adidas – MiCoach Boston

Last month, we worked on two incredible events with adidas to roll out their new MiCoach Running System. This week, we’ll be in Boston with Action Marketing Group launching another initiative coinciding with the Boston Marathon. We’ll have teams at the John Hancock Sports and Fitness Expo demonstrating the MiCoach system as well as adidas apparel. Outside of the convention we’ll have roaming teams out and about giving away free swag and signing people up for special limited time offers. The weekend of fun will come to end on Monday at the Boston Marathon as we have staff there distributing shirts, yoga mats, and even applying temporary tattoos!

The John Hancock Sports and Fitness Expo is at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston April 16th through the 18th. The Boston Marathon takes place on April 19th.

Lang Lang @ Harris Theater

The Harris Theater is proud to present world renowned pianist, Lang Lang. For his first appearance, Lang Lang will perform an impressive two concerto program under his mentor, conductor Christoph Eschenbach. The performance will be accompanied by the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra.

We are looking forward to working with the Harris Theater again in promoting this exciting new show. We have been distributing flyers and posters around the city. Australia’s prog rockers make there way stateside for a nationwide tour! Winner’s of several Australian awards including Most Popular Act and Most Popular Live Act, Karnivool will be tooling around the country hitting up several major cities and events including SXSW.

Not too long ago, we were tasked with printing and distributing materials for Slayer’s performance at the UIC Pavilion on February 5th. Unfortunately, the performance was postponed. But now it has been rescheduled to August! We are working Jam Productions, printing and distributing posters and handbills for this highly anticipated show! Many were disappointed at the news of the cancellation, put now is your chance to see one of the heaviest bands in the world! Tickets are still available, and tickets purchased for the February 5th show will be honored. Well be hitting up a variety of metal shows in Chicago passing out handbills, so be sure to grab one for more details!

If you were out at the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, you probably saw our crack team of guerrilla marketers passing out handbills. This is part of project that we have been working on together with our good friends at Live Nation. This week, we are working with our good friends at the Action Marketing Group as part of adidas’ new campaign for their miCoach products and website. We organized staff in Portland, OR and Jacksonville, FL who are demonstrating the miCoach gear and system. They will also be stationed at annual races (Shamrock Run in Portland, Gate River Run in Jacksonville) in order to pass out promo materials, and get runners excited about miCoach. Court Theatre is proud to present there latest production written by acclaimed playwright Tony Kushner. The Illusion tells the story of a father’s attempt to find his estranged son in a world of theatrical magic, outrageous humor, and true, complicated love.
