A Catered Affair @ Stage 773

Porchlight Music Theater is debuting another musical in Chicago later this month with “A Catered Affair.” Based on the Bette Davis film, the story of a bride to be and her wedding is becoming an American tale. A couple has to decide whether to spend their family savings on their daughter’s wedding or to save the family business. As prevalent as it was in 1950s, this new musical is a true family dramedy.

The direction staff has been handling distribution of promotional materials throughout the north side of Chicago. Direction printworks handled the production of promotional materials.

Afro-Beats! @ Harris Theatre

The Harris Theatre is celebrating Black History Month with Afro-Beats!, an afternoon performance that’s suitable for the entire family. Not just a sit down show, the event will allow children to participate in drum circles, traditional African dances and singing songs. Part of the Fulcrum Point New Music Project, the show will cover the rhythms, sounds and sights of West Africa in a 75-minute multi-platform performance.

The Convert @ Goodman Theatre

Being forced to choose between family and god isn’t new. Set in 1895 southern Africa, “The Convert,” an upcoming work at the Goodman, tells the story of Jekesai, a young woman who has escaped a forced marriage thanks to a man of Christianity. This leads her to becoming the Christian’s protege, something that puts her at odds with her family. When an anti-colonialism uprising brews, she’s forced to choose between the two sides.

The direction team has been distributing posters and handbills, produced in house, throughout Edgewater, Rogers Park and Uptown with a focus on Chicago’s African population.

The Chicago History Museum wants you to visit. From Sunday, February 5 to Wednesday, February 29, the CHS is letting in all Illinois residents for free. For nearly the entire month, the museum that covers Chicago from the foundation to today is making it easier than ever to learn about the neighborhoods we inhabit.

Spring 2012 Visiting Artist Programming @ The School of the Art Institute of Chicago

In addition to being a world class art museum, the Art Institute of Chicago is also an acclaimed art school. This spring the school is hosting seven events from visiting artists. The next one takes place Tuesday, February 7 and features Sam Lipsyte and Ben Marcus. These two authors have written New York Times Notable Books and their work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Harper’s and more. This will be the first event in a series that bring in authors, designers, video artists, painters, photographers and sculptors.

The direction team has been taking out materials for the Visiting Artist Programming throughout artist friendly routes in Pilsen, River West, Ukranian Village, Logan Square and more. We’ve been focusing on the Sam Lipsyte and Ben Marcus event as well as the Emily Pilloton appearance on February 16.

Vintage Bazaar @ Dank Haus

The Vintage Bazaar is returning sooner than ever before. The traveling pop up vintage shopping market is heading to Lincoln Square’s Dank Haus, the first location for the Bazaar. This two day event will feature items and clothing for all sexes and ages. If you’re not sure how to spend a weekend afternoon, this is the perfect solution. Over 40 vendors will be showcasing their finest wares for the highly selective thrifting public.

27 seasons in, the American Theater Company is continuing their tradition of bringing new work into the world. “Disgraced,” a new play by Ayad Akhtar, tells the story of a Muslim-American lawyer rising in the corporate ladder. With each rung, he loses another piece of his culture and himself. What’s more important, attaining one’s goals or maintaining one’s sense of self?

American Idiot @ Oriental Theatre

It began as a comeback album of sorts. After getting a little soft and using more and more acoustic guitars, Green Day wasn’t nearly as popular since their major label debut “Dookie.” Nearly 10 years later, they were at a crossroads. “American Idiot,” the bands first concept album, was released with moderate expectations. It eclipsed those expectations. The record spawned multiple Grammy’s, year long arena world tours, a live album and a small musical. That musical, similiar to the album, grew into an award winning Broadway show, Tony award winning hit. It’s coming to Chicago for the first time next week and just like the Broadway run, will sell out.

Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting @ Lookingglass Theatre

A week before Major League Baseball’s opening day 1947, general manager for the Brooklyn Dodgers Branch Rickey plans on calling up Jackie Robinson and breaking baseball’s color barrier. Before introducing the superstar to the Major’s, a meeting with Jackie Robinson, boxer Joe Louis, entertainer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, actor and activist Paul Robeson and Rickey took place. This play, based on that meeting, has been receiving rave reviews. The Chicago Tribune gave the production a three and a half star review and said it’s a, “terrific new show.”

Molly Shanahan is debuting her new work “The Delicate Hour” late next month at the Columbia College Dance Center. This piece explores habit in movement with an ensembles of dancers practiciting sensual, personal and organic gestures. The project is three years in the making, ensuring that each move has been well thought out, regardless of how spontaneous it may seem.

Each Tuesday the Museum of Contemporary Art presents a different program designed to educate and entertain one and all. The first Tuesday is Doodleganza, an interactive evening where an illustrator, cartoonist or other type of artist leads a group of all ages in a sketch session. All are invited, regardless of artistic skill level. The second Tuesday is Culture Catalysts, an evening of lectures from some of Chicago’s cultural critics and participants. The third Tuesday delivers Internet Superheroes, a series of artists creating works that cross between technology and art. Closing the month is Face the Strange. The MCA gets loud with some of Chicago’s best indie, electronic and avant garde acts. Each week offers another unique opportunity to explore and interact with the Chicago community.

Rogers Park is slowly becoming a theater, music and comedy destination thanks to Mayne Stage. Their February lineup is a smorgasbord of well-curated events. Whether you’re interested in flemenco guitar, Andrew Lloyd Weber, opera, dinner parties or just need a place to watch the Big Game, one of the newer theaters on the north side is giving Chicago another option for a night out.

If you haven’t kept your New Year’s Resolution, here’s a little inspiration. The athletes that make up the WCR are the kind of folks that prove excuses are never accepted. If they’re risking life and limb on the flat track at the UIC, there’s no reason you can’t run on the treadmill a few hours a week. This first bout of the 2012 is a mini tournament, featuring all four teams facing off. The night doubles as a fundraiser. Each team picked a charity to donate their proceeds. Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Alzheimer’s Association will all benefit from the WCR.

The guy calling the MMA fights is a well respected comedic voice in podcasting. If you don’t know who Joe Rogan is, a simple Google search will reveal legions of adoring fans for the sometimes controversial comic.

David Mamet’s newest controversial work, “Race” has begun its month long run at the Goodman. After a year of a critically acclaimed, sold out run on Broadway, the play is being staged with direction by Chuck Smith. Two lawyers, one black, one white, are hired to defend a wealthy white man charged with the sexual assault of an African-American female. The prejudices of each character is explored in a play that could only be written by Mamet.

Ghetto Klown 2012 U.S. Tour

After work-shopping his newest one man show at the Royal George in Lincoln Park before bringing it to New York and L.A., John Leguizamo is now taking it south. The show has garnered positive press from The Huffington Post, New York Times, L.A. Times and more. The good folks over at WestBeth Entertainment are bringing “Ghetto Klown” throughout Texas and Florida in February and March.

The direction staff has set up special promotional events in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. We’ve also been distributing posters and handbills on specialty hipster, Latino, comedy and Broadway routes.

Black Pearl Sings! @ Northlight Theatre

“Black Pearl Sings!” a new play written by Frank Higgins and starring Northlight favorites E. Faye Butler and Susie McMonagle, has begun its month long run at Skokie’s Northlight Theatre. Using a cappella versions of not well known American folk songs, the production tells the story of two women during the Depression, one a talented singer languishing in a southern prison and the other is a Library of Congress song collector, set on recording her songs.

This month they’re focusing on their LGBT Film Series. The next two Saturdays feature films running from 10:30am until 4:30. The films are free with museum admission. Sirens @ Citadel Theatre

A loving husband, Sam, wrote a loving song for his wife, Rose. 25 years later, they’re still living off the residuals from that one hit. 25 years later, Sam feels stuck in the mud. He’s hit a creative wall and begins to look for a new muse on Facebook. Rose decides to surprise her husband with an anniversary trip to the Greek Islands. When the Sirens of the Islands begin to lure Sam, the choice between jumping into the sea and jumping in bed with his wife becomes the dilemma. This romantic comedy was a hit at the 2010 Humana Festival of New American Plays and is being staged for its first Midwest run.

Time Stands Still @ Steppenwolf Theatre

When photojournalist Sarah Goodwin is forced to slow down, come back home and face her family and friends, she has to reconsider whether life makes more sense in a domestic setting or in war fields.

Universes is bringing their poetry, hip-hop, stand up, music and more production “Ameriville” to the Victory Gardens. Using Hurricane Katrina as a jumping off point, the 90 minute piece explores race, class, poverty, immigration and political awareness. Universes has been working together over 10 years. What started as a spoken word group in New York City has expanded to a multi-platform artistic group that perform original works around the world.

Hunger @ Lifeline Theatre

The Lifeline Theatre will stage the world premiere of “Hunger,” based on the 2003 novel by American author and journalist Elise Blackwell. Adapted by Chris Hainsworth and directed by Robert Kauzlaric, “Hunger” tells the tale of Russian botanist Ilya and his struggle during the 900-day Nazi siege of Leningrad. Ilya and his co-workers are protecting a cache of seeds for future generations. As the siege continues and people begin to starve, Ilya is torn between surviving the present or protecting the future.

The direction team has been hitting most north side neighborhoods with promotional materials for this Lifeline show.

The Trocks are an all-male ballet troupe featuring world class dancers on point. Sure, it’s campy and fun but it also presents a plethora of athletic and artistic ability. Their performance of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo for one night at the Harris Theater is for the dance fan and novice alike.

Italian language courses are now available at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Chicago, or the Italian Cultural Center of Chicago for those of you not up on romance languages. The Italian language classes are taught at Italidea. Founded in 1995, this not for profit is open to all ages and levels of interest. With elementary to advanced study, Italidea uses the General European Board Framework for curriculum. Classes also have focuses. Literature, Art, Music, Cinema, Writing, Tourism, Business and general conversation ensure that you’ll want to learn the language.

The Vitalist Theatra, along with the DCA, is bringing the 1957 Kōbō Abe drama “The Ghost is Here” to an American stage for the first time. The story of a con man scamming the recently bereaved is as preposterous and interesting as it was fifty years ago. Vitalist actor Jamie Vann returns to the company to star in this production.

Selznick, famed screenwriter and columnist Ben Hecht and “Wizard of Oz” director Victor Fleming spent five days camped out in a writers room, massaging a piece with all the right parts into an Academy Award winning film. The comedy “Moonlight & Magnolias” tells the story of this legendary writing session.

2011 Bassist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, Christian McBride will be sharing the stage with singer, rapper and electric bassist Meshell Ndegeocello to celebrate the 1978 collaboration between Charles Mingus and Joni Mitchell. The Chicago Jazz Ensemble is presenting this special event at the Harris Theater and letting the public get to know both performers in the days prior to the concert with Listening Sessions, artists interviews with panels of jazz experts that are open to the public.

55 Day Grand Opening @ Old Town School Of Folk Music

To celebrate the 55 years of musical service to the city of Chicago, the Old Town School of Folk Music is expanding into another facility and programming 55 events to celebrate. From January 9 to March 3 there will be concerts, poster exhibits, comedy shows, dance classes, play dates, film screenings and more, most for free and all open to the public. In the tradition of bringing music from around the world, the OTSFM will continue doing what they do best, this time on a nightly basis in a soon to be open new space.

Now in its seventh year, the “Too Hot to Handel” shows will once again honor Martin Luther King Jr through the music of Handel’s “Messiah.” These two performances will feature over two hundred jazz musicians. Saxophonists Jim Gailloreto, Pat Mallinger and Greg Ward will be joined by trumpet player Dave Spencer, with Tracy Kirk and Steve Berry on trombone to form a powerhouse jazz combo.
