2012 Tuesdays in the Cafe @ Museum of Contemporary Art

Each Tuesday the Museum of Contemporary Art presents a different program designed to educate and entertain one and all. The first Tuesday is Doodleganza, an interactive evening where an illustrator, cartoonist or other type of artist leads a group of all ages in a sketch session. All are invited, regardless of artistic skill level. The second Tuesday is Culture Catalysts, an evening of lectures from some of Chicago’s cultural critics and participants. The third Tuesday delivers Internet Superheroes, a series of artists creating works that cross between technology and art. Closing the month is Face the Strange. The MCA gets loud with some of Chicago’s best indie, electronic and avant garde acts. Each week offers another unique opportunity to explore and interact with the Chicago community.

Our staff has been taking out handbills on the custom hipster specialty route for the MCA Tuesday programming.

League of Chicago Theatres Summer Theatre Guide

It’s difficult the navigate the Chicago theatre landscape. It’s one of the few cities that has the problem of too much going on. There are more productions being staged than nights to see them. Rather than miss out on what could be, go out and seize the night. The League of Chicago Theatres Summer Theatre Guide is just the right place to start. The guide features a listing and description of what this fair city has to offer.

The direction staff has been delivering this guide to hotels on our city concierge route. We’re reaching out to the tourists that make this a mecca for theater.

A Beautiful Spell @ Royal George

The Rare Terra Theatre opened the world premier of “A Beautiful Spell” this week at the Royal George. Written by Greg Kalleres and directed by Ian Streicher, this comedy is about one night of a couple’s crisis. Jim and Franny wake up in the middle of the night and realize they might not love each other. We follow them for the next few hours, while they try to figure out what went wrong before the sun comes up.

We’re happy to be working with the Rare Terra Theatre for the first time. Our staff has been distributing posters and handbills for their production throughout the theater going communities on the north side of Chicago.

Sherwood Music Conservatory

The Sherwood Music Conservatory is an excellent destination for the teenager in your house that may want to pursue the art form as a career. As a member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, Sherwood is the place for serious, aspiring artists as well as amateurs interested in expanding their musical horizon. The school has begun their summer session and will be producing concerts and special events throughout the season.

The direction staff has distributed the Sherwood summer catalog throughout the city.

Beauty and the Beast @ Ford Center/Oriental Theatre

Broadway in Chicago is bringing Belle and the Beast to Chicago this summer. Based on the classic film, the musical “Beauty and the Beast” will be at the beautiful Ford Center/Oriental Theatre in downtown Chicago. If you’ve never been to a large scale musical, consider this one. It’s based on a the Disney film, is returning from Broadway and is appropriate for all ages. With tickets as low as $18, the production is affordable for the whole family.

The direction team has been traversing the city and suburbs with Broadway in Chicago materials.

Next to Normal @ Bank of America Theatre

You are familiar with the uber-hit musical “Rent.” Whether you know the musical, soundtrack or film, you know it. You might not have seen it or you may know every word. It was inescapable. The director of that phenomenon has moved on to “Next to Normal.” The recepient for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and winner of three 2009 Tony Awards including Best Score “Next to Normal” is on track to yet another uber-hit. The woman who took home the 2009 Tony for Best Actress in a Musical, Alice Ripley, will be reprising her role in this all too short run.

Direction has been promoting this Broadway in Chicago production throughout the Windy City.

From Freak to Clique @ Victory Gardens

Victory Gardens Crip Slam presents “From Freak to Clique” this weekend. As part of the Access Project, this production is designed to involve people with disabilities in all aspects of theater, both on and off the stage. “From Freak to Clique” is written by and stars Mat Fraser. The new one-man show is about the performers history with his disability on stage, screen, in music, sport and real life.

The Fab Faux @ GW Lisner Auditorium

Direction is thrilled to be promoting the upcoming Fab Faux show in our nations capital. The kind folks at HK Entertainment are bringing the most musically skilled Beatles tribute act to the Lisner Auditorium next month. The group is comprised of members from some of late nights best bands, including “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “Conan.” The group specializes in performing the music the Beatles never toured. This stop will feature The Fab Faux with the Hogshead Horns and the Creme Tangerine Strings performing “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” in its entirety. Following the performance of probably the most important rock album of all time, the group will end with a set of fan favorites.

Direction built a DC route for this promotion. We’re now ready and able to distribute materials throughout DC and the surrounding suburbs.

February Events @ Chicago History Museum

The Chicago History Museum is awesome. I love the building as much as the exhibits. It’s easy to lose an afternoon inside. It’s OK because you don’t feel bad since you’re learning about Chicago. It’s also a great place to bring the kids. The new Lincoln’s Chicago exhibit opened this week. One of the countries most well-loved presidents visited Chicago enough to make it his second home. The CHM is turning back the clock to the 1860s. The CHM is also celebrating President’s Day next Monday. The museum has family friendly activities planned from 10am to 3pm.

Direction has distributed CHM materials throughout the city to promote their monthly events.

Boojum! @ DCA Theater

The United States stage premier of hit Australian musical “Boojum! Nonsense, Truth, and Lewis Carroll” opens this week at the DCA Storefront Theater. Written by Martin and Peter Wesley-Smith, the production is part musical theater and part fantasy story based on the Lewis Carroll poem “The Hunting of the Snark.” Come see the company the Chicago Reader has called the, “Best effort to keep opera a living art!”

The direction staff is proud to be promoting this Chicago Opera Vanguard event. Direction printworks also handled the promotional material creation for this premier.

Cafe Bustelo Activates at Sleepless Night

This past weekend, direction tour marketing teamed with our friends BMF Media Group to provide brand ambassadors who sampled Bustelo Cool and the new Bustelo Ice Cream to the throngs of attendees of Sleepless Night in Miami. Our Miami street teams worked crowds from 9PM through 2AM directing traffic to the Cafe Bustelo store and two mobile stations set-up for on site sampling.

The teams had a great time and the party went all night and we went through ALLOT of product samples. I can’t wait for Bustelo Ice Cream to hit Chicago but in the meantime I’ll have to settle for a Bustelo Cool!

Rob Bell @ Congress Theater

The famous author, speaker and founding pastor of the Mars Hill Bible Church returns to Chicago in support of his new book/lecture. Rob Bell’s latest, Drops Like Stars, which discusses the relationship between suffering and creativity, will surely draw sold out crowds. To help promote his appearance, we executed a quick flyer and poster distribution throughout the city. Be sure to catch Rob Bell when he makes his stop in Chicago, one of only four locations on his Midwest tour.

Rob Bell’s Drop Like Stars is at the Congress Theatre August 19th.
