It began as a comeback album of sorts. After getting a little soft and using more and more acoustic guitars, Green Day wasn’t nearly as popular since their major label debut “Dookie.” Nearly 10 years later, they were at a crossroads. “American Idiot,” the bands first concept album, was released with moderate expectations. It eclipsed those expectations. The record spawned multiple Grammy’s, year long arena world tours, a live album and a small musical. That musical, similiar to the album, grew into an award winning Broadway show, Tony award winning hit. It’s coming to Chicago for the first time next week and just like the Broadway run, will sell out.

This American story of blue collar immigrants making a new home in Manhattan has been winning over audiences and critics. Yes, Peter will fly but in this event, so does the audience. Just because he gets to fly over Edwardian London doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to as well.

A mixture of circus arts and urban dance, “Cirque Éloize iD” is the return of director Jeannot Painchaud. The show is set in public spaces in the middle of a city. It’s nondescript, a place people can form their own identity, a new identity. The soundtrack was composed by Jean-Phi Goncalves (Beast) and Alex McMahon. In addition to an all new score, there’s also a multimedia aspect. Sixteen performers from twelve different disciplines form the cast and help give the stage a unique flavor.

Working @ Broadway Playhouse

“Working” by Studs Terkel is one of the most important oral histories of the 20th century. It was released as a book in 1974. A few years later Broadway decided it should be a musical. After a short run the production ended. Since then “Working” has been a PBS special, a graphic novel and inspired a sequel. Now, it’s being reinterpreted in a new Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked,” “Pippin,” “Godspell”). In addition to seeing this musical because it’s from one of the greatest Chicagoans about Chicago, it’s also just the second show in Broadway in Chicago’s new theater.

Theatre for a New Audience, the first U.S. based theatre company to be invited to the Royal Shakespeare Company, is staging “The Merchant of Venice.” The controversial and classic play is coming off of performances Off-Broadway and in Stratford-Upon-Avon. Shylock is being played by Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham (“Amadeus,” “Scarface”) and the play is directed by Darko Tesnjak, the former Artistic Director at the Old Globe. “The New York Times” said, “Mr. Tresnjak and his superb cast allow us to see with unusual clarity the light and the dark in Shakespeare’s characters, not just the wronged but vengeful Shylock and his nemesis, the casually bigoted Antonio (Tom Nelis), but also the wise, loving Portia (Kate MacCluggage), who sees fit to test her husband’s love with unnecessary calculation, and comparatively insignificant players like the servant Launcelot Gobbo (a spirited, funny Jacob Ming-Trent).”

The classic musical “Les Miserables” is coming back to Chicago to celebrate the productions twenty-fifth anniversary. The performance has new staging and new scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. The current production has been to England and received raved reviews. The Guardian recently said “Les Misérables is a rousing, shamelessly entertaining evening of tuneful and spectacular popular theatre that saved the Royal Shakespeare Company from penury.”

Dolly Parton’s hit film has been turned into a hit musical and it’s coming to Chicago. Direct from a successful run on Broadway, this new production has already won a Tony Award for best original song and a Grammy nominated score. Purchase tickets ASAP. The show will only be in town for a short while and it’s not to be missed. Variety has said the touring production is, “a light and lively crowdpleaser with a pronounced appeal to baby boomers.”

The story that any Christmas movie lover knows, “White Christmas” is finally getting the stage show it deserves. Direct from Broadway, this new Irving Berlin musical includes all the tunes that made it famous, like “How Deep is the Ocean?” “Sisters,” “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep,” and the song that’s inevitably stuck in your head and you’re probably humming now, “White Christmas”.

The highly successful, long running, award winning show “Wicked” returns for a short Chicago run. The Chicago Tribune called the show “Chicago’s musical phenomenon.” It would be hard to disagree. The show was extended and extended into a three and a half year run, making it the longest Chicago’s longest running Broadway musical.

Everyone’s favorite boy fighter turned ballerina in war-town Ireland is closing up show at the Oriental Theatre. “Billy Elliot” ends its successful Broadway in Chicago run just after Thanksgiving on November 28. The 2009 Tony Award winner for Best Musical (which for those of you who don’t follow theater means it’s the best show on the biggest stage in the world) is perfect for the entire family. We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Broadway in Chicago on the pre-Broadway premier of The Addams Family in Chicago at the Ford Center. I have a special place for Nathan Lane and can’t wait to see his portrayal of Gomez Addams. This macabre new show, written by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman and Rick Elise is sure to be a hit so be sure to get your tickets before its too late. We are currently distributing posters promoting the show throughout the downtown loop so keep an eye out for this endearing and hilarious family of characters on the walls of your favorite coffee shop.

Everyone’s favorite flying nanny is back. The stage production of Mary Poppins combines the original story with the classic Disney film. We always enjoy working with Broadway in Chicago, and we are executing yet another poster distribution campaign throughout the city. The original Broadway production stars Ashley Brown and Gavin Lee and will include the songs we all remember, such as “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” and, of course, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

Chicago continues to be one of the most popular shows on Broadway. The limited run took place here in the city of Chicago, and featured John O’Hurley (from Seinfeld and Dancing with the Stars fame)as Billy Flynn. For the two weeks it was in town, we performed poster distribution in order to make everyone aware of the show. Winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, and a Grammy, Chicago continues to be a big draw to audiences here, and around he world. Be sure to catch it next time it blows through town.
