The Chicago History Museum wants you to visit. From Sunday, February 5 to Wednesday, February 29, the CHS is letting in all Illinois residents for free. For nearly the entire month, the museum that covers Chicago from the foundation to today is making it easier than ever to learn about the neighborhoods we inhabit.

The direction staff has been distributing Chicago History Museum materials on multiple specialty routes and on our regular neighborhood stops.

Whenever you forget just how great Chicago is and was, take a trip to the Chicago History Museum. Each month the CHM highlights one aspect of what make this a dynamic city. This month they’re focusing on their LGBT Film Series. The next two Saturdays feature films running from 10:30am until 4:30. The films are free with museum admission. Some of the films planned to be screened are “Out and Proud in Chicago,” “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin,” “I am the Queen” and more.

Chicago is known as the home of Al Capone. It’s actually not dangerous, especially in places Capone used to frequent. It seems pointless to fight the town’s unwarranted reputation. Rather than try to convince folks that the city hasn’t been run by gangsters in forever, you might as well brush up on the history of crime in Chicago. The CHM is in the midst of their Crime in Chicago seminar. The next week includes a bus tour, walking tour, pub crawl, film screening and a lecture about the history of street gangs in Chicago. Whether you want to imbibe while learning, sit back and see the sights, walk the grounds of the old World’s Fair or listen to Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Illinois John M. Hagedorn talk about the the origin of today’s gangs, there’s a level of education for you.

October at the Chicago History Museum brings us Dress Code/FashioNext. Students from Columbia College Chicago, The Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago, International Academy of Design and Technology in Chicago, and School of the Art Institute of Chicago will showcase their newest and best works in a runway competition. A winner will also be chosen from FashioNext: The Charles James Project. An evening of youthful exuberance and fashion occurs October 19. Tickets are $25, $15 for students.

June @ Chicago History Museum

This month the Chicago History Museum is celebrating Pride Month. If you’re only familiar with the parade, you’re missing out. This Sunday the CHM will have a boat tour entitled “Pride on the Water.” In addition to being on the water, you’ll learn about LGBT history; discover how LGBT people have shaped the city and learn about the Out in Chicago exhibition. If the water isn’t for you, the CHM is also doing a bus tour in August. Out in Chicago co-curator Jill Austin will lead a tour of historical sites, including Hull-House, Henry Gerber’s residence, and the Belmont Rocks.

The Chicago History Museum has just opened its new exhibit, “Out in Chicago.” This exhibit celebrates and studies the history of one of Chicago’s most neglected groups. Since the formation of the city, LGBT citizens have been coming to this urban hub. This new section of the CHM will explore the stories and lives of a community that has been here longer than any of us.

The direction team has distributed posters and handbills for the CHM throughout the city.

Spring is in the air. It’s the perfect time to be outside, specifically in a trolley, and participate in a History Pub Crawl. The Chicago History Museum is offering Mother Nature’s Nectars tonight. The tour includes stops at places serving organic beer, wine and spirits. If you’re interested in the Out at CHM series, you won’t want to miss, “LGBT History Goes to Court: From Anita Bryant to Prop 8.” Yale historian George Chancey will speak about the history of court cases dealing with marriage, antigay discrimination and antigay demonization.

The Chicago History Museum is a great place to spend the afternoon. Whether you’re a tourist or a lifelong resident of the Windy City, the CHM has something you’ve never seen. In addition to their excellent exhibits, the museum regularly executes special events. Monthly history pub crawls, Sunday documentaries, and multiple types of tours ensure that there’s always something to learn about the city you call home.

In addition to taking out the CHM poster and handbills on our city routes, direction printworks handled the production of the materials.

Chicago History Museum in January

This January the Chicago History Museum is celebrating their eighth year of GLBT programming. From now until January 27 new members of the museum are eligible for a free ticket to each of the three special ‘Out’ events. For those that buy family plans two free tickets to each event are provided.

Sexicon: Language and Identity, January 27, will cover the usage of certain powerful words. In addition to this program there will be a cocktail hour. When Romeo Was a Woman, March 10, will be a study of Charlotte Cushman, the nineteenth century’s most famous cross-dressing and woman-loving actress. Beyond Shame: Life and Love in the 1950s, April 14, will cover a decade that wasn’t too kind to those in the GLBT community.

Chicago History Museum in December

A trip to the Chicago History Museum is always a good time. Whether you’re going to see temporary exhibits like “Facing Freedom” or “I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot”, you’re able to learn about important social issues to what to wear on the big day. There are also the permanent exhibits, like “Chicago: Crossroads of America,” which features a classic CTA train. The CHM also programs wonderful events every month. December has Sacred Spaces on December 4, Deck the Pubs! Christmas Caroling on December 9, a “Devil in the White City” bus tour on December 11, holiday themed films every weekend and much more.

The direction team is always happy to print and distribute Chicago History Museum materials throughout the city.

Chicago Television @ Chicago History Museum

There’s a special place in my heart for Chicago television. I’ve watched WGN every morning since I can remember. It started with Bozo, pinning to play the Grand Prize Game, wishing that arrow would land on me. Now it’s getting the weather from Tom Skilling. The superstation is just that, super, and there’s good reason why it’s still around today. All throughout November the Chicago History Museum will be celebrating Chicago television. From talks about groundbreaking children’s programing to tours of the world-renowned PBS station WTTW, these events promise to be both entertaining and educational.

The direction team has been distributing handbills to most of the north side and parts of the west and south side to promote these lectures, tours and more.

For centuries, wedding fashion followed everyday fashion. Only recently have brides chosen to eschew contemporary formal wear for styles that directly reference the past. Today, hoop skirts, corsets, sinewy fishtails, long trains, and leg-o-mutton sleeves can all be seen on the aisle, but each style echoes decades past. The Chicago History Museum’s vast costume collection includes a stunning array of wedding attire—for brides, grooms, bridesmaids, and more—that reveals 150 years of fashion favored by Chicago couples. I Do! presents forty-five dresses, plus accessories, corsets, and men’s attire.

In addition to distributing materials throughout the city, we’ll also be passing out handbills at Chicago Bridal Expo events. Be sure to check out the exhibit this summer!

This month, the Chicago History Museum will proudly present the sixteenth annual Making History Awards at the Palmer House. This event will celebrate the accomplishments of three individuals and one corporation for their historic contributions to the city and nation. By identifying extraordinary awardees each year, the CHM hopes to make history more personal and emphasize how history is a living and breathing part of our lives.

In addition to the Making History Awards, the CHM has some great events happening in the month of May, including the lecture Making Sense of the Census, Project Sunday’s showing of documentary films, and many others. We’ve been working on our monthly handbill distribution for CHM, delivering materials throughout Chicago. Be sure to grab one and check out what’s happening!

Last month, we were looking forward to welcoming spring here in the city, and, as I write this, they are calling for 70 degree weather. This change in weather also ushers in some very exciting events at the Chicago History Museum this month. you’ll want to catch the Prohibition Seminar to learn how the law and amendment came to be. Plus, no lecture on prohibition would be complete without an additional lecture on Al Capone. Get Capone! is a lecture on the the hunt for the notorious gangster. Rounding out the Prohibition theme is the film Rumrunners, Moonshiners, and Bootleggers screening for Project Sundays.

Even though we were told by the nation’s most famous weatherman that we can expect six more weeks of winter, things are already beginning to heat up as the month of March begins to give us whiffs of spring here in the Windy City. Next month, the Chicago History Museum will be offering several special events including a celebration for Chicago’s 173rd birthday, a showing of the film Lioness, about five female support soldiers who saw actual combat in World War II, and OUT at CHM presents Queer Latinos: Art and Change. North & Clark Cafe @ the Chicago History Museum

We work regularly with the Chicago History Museum on a variety of promotional distributions, but now we’ll be helping them with a unique street promotion on election day. This Tuesday, we’ll be working in conjunction with their North & Clark Cafe to distribute coffee and muffin samples to voters who make it out to the polling stations early. There are two places to vote (the Latin School & the Chicago History Museum) and we’ll have teams at both locations handing out free samples to all who brave the weather to cast their ballots. The cafe will also have special hours that day (they’ll be open at 6am), so if you dig the samples, head over to grab yourself a proper coffee and breakfast.

North & Clark Cafe is located in the Chicago History Museum at 1601 N. Clark and is open daily from 9:30am-3pm Moday through Saturday, 12pm-4pm on Sundays.

February at the Chicago History Museum

February will officially mark the end of Lincoln’s bicentennial celebration. But even though “Honest Abe” turns 201, the Chicago History Museum will still be hosting several exciting events in February. On President’s Day, celebrate the legacy of the nation’s presidents with the entire family through storytelling, dramatic performances, craft activities, and music by the Michael Teolis Singers. Several events revolving around candy including A Sweet Kinda Town and Classic Candy comes to CHM, as well as panel discussions about online dating and the mortgage crisis.

CHM has tasked us with manufacturing and distributing handbills which advertise the above mentioned events. We’ll be out and about in various neighborhoods and locations in Chicago. Be sure to pick one up, and find out more about what’s happening next month at the Chicago History Museum.

2009 is almost gone, and soon, a new year and new decade will be ushered in. What better way is there to start off than visiting the Chicago History Museum! For the first month of 2010, CHM will be hosting some very exciting and unique events including Compañeras a film profiling America’s first all-female mariachi band, Vino in the Village which features food, wine, and history, and lastly, a very special celebration of Martin Luther King Jr Day on January 18th.

We are working on prnting and distributing materials for all of CHM’s upcoming events. Keep an eye out for all of the handbills at your local businesses, and take advantage of all the great events next month!

November at the Chicago History Museum

Sadly, many of the events such as Paddling into the Past are coming to an end in October, but the Chicago History Museum has plenty of other events to keep you busy up until the holidays. November will see the continuation of Lincoln Bicentennial, with the Lincoln Diversified lecture series and a November installment of the History Pub Crawl. This month the History Pub Crawl visits Little Italy for their Mamma Mia! Little Italy where you will experience Italian immigrants to college students. Residents in this neighborhood maintain its rich history. Enjoy a little bit of vino or a whole lotta birra on this walking tour.

Benito Juarez and the Making of Modern Mexico @ the Chicago History Museum

As part of the exhibition Benito Juarez and the Making of Modern Mexico, the Chicago History Museum commissioned us to distribute brochures advertising this and the new Abraham Lincoln exhibition to Hispanic and Latino communities throughout the city. The new exhibition was co-curated by the National Museum of Mexican Art, and is a fascinating exploration of Abraham Lincoln’s contemporary, Benito Juarez. Last week we visited many different neighborhoods and locations distributing the bi-lingual flyers. Keep an eye out for the materials, and pick one up today!

The start of fall brings some interesting exhibitions and events to the Chicago History Museum. October will see the start of the new exhibit Abraham Lincoln Transformed, which explores the impact of Lincoln’s decision to ban slavery. Benito Juarez and the Making of Modern Mexico takes an in-depth look at the Mexican president, and how he transformed Mexico into a modern republic. Also, be sure to check out the film Mexico’s White House, and Rubin Castillo’s lecture, Lincoln’s Leadership for a Multicultural World as well.

As it begins to cool down in Chicago, things are heating up at the Chicago History Museum. The lecture/discussion Chicago 2016: The Thrill of Victory or the Agony of Defeat? will be taking place the 1st of September. Project Sunday presents And They Came to Chicago which covers the 150 year history of Italian settlement in the city. Lastly, be sure to take advantage of the Civil War Chicago bus tour. Summer is officially underway, and that means Chicago History Museum has added several fun summer themed activities to it’s roster. Be sure to take advantage of the Paddle into the Past, Sunset Paddle, and Fireworks Paddle kayak tours. Bring your significant (or not so significant) other to watch The Break Up as part of the Movies in the Park series. And finally, don’t forget about the Devil in the White City Boat Tour.

Summer is almost here, and the Chicago History Museum has lots of events lined up for the month of June. A special boat tour sponsored by Goose Island will cover Chicago’s beer history during a sunset cruise. In addition to the various cruises, CHM will also offer kayak tours on the Chicago River, and Project Sundays brings an interesting look at the world of fashion with the screening of a Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton documentary.

Besides the hope that it will usher in some decent weather, the month of May is chalk full of pre-summer events for everyone. The Cinco De Mayo Fiesta!, is a first for the Chicago History Museum, and will feature chefs from Adobo Grill, along with their fantastic guacamole, teaching the perfect margarita recipe as well as the difference between certain tequilas. In addition to events taking place on the actual CHM grounds, there are several events happening off site including the Making History Awards at the Palmer House, and Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Keynote Lecture and Gala Dinner at Navy Pier’s Grand Ballroom. Be sure to take advantage!

The month of April is about to usher in a fantastic line up of events at the Chicago History Museum. Get some helpful tips to improve your excise routine with Shape Up Chicago! on April 2nd. As part of Project Sundays, be sure to catch The Hunt for John Wilkes Booth on April 5th, which explores the search for America’s first presidential assassin. And finally, go out and celebrate the anniversary of the end of Prohibition with the New Beer’s Eve pub crawl, courtesy of Goose Island on April 6th. Everybody's Lincoln @ the Chicago History Museum

Honest Abe; 200 years later he is still considered one of the county’s greatest presidents. In contrast to our last elected “leader”, Lincoln was what we would call a history buff, believing those who don’t know it are doomed to repeat it. As part of the Chicago Historty Museum’s Lincoln Bicentennial, CHM presents the Everybody’s Lincoln Web Project. Upload pictories of yourself, friends, and family, to see how they’d look wearing Lincoln’s signature beard and top hat.

Everybody’s Lincoln begins February 12th along with other events and exhibitions.

February is bringing lots of interesting and diverse events to the Chicago History Museum. Events include Transportation Frustration, where contemporary issues concerning the cities transportation are discussed, Chocolate Confidential, a film which explores the world wide business of chocolate, and of course Great Chicago Stories that covers a wide variety of topics regarding Chicago’s history. Starting this month, Chicago History Museum presents Out, which chronicles the history of the gay, lesbian, and transexual community. Discussion topics include Clothes are for Closets, Speaking Out Down South, and Surviving Reagan. In order to help promote Out at CHM, direction will be utilizing its “GLBT Route”, which includes stores throughout “Boystown” and other GLBT focused locations.

Out at CHM presents Clothes are for Closets January 29th, Speaking Out Down South March 26th, and Surviving Reagan May 7th.

The first month of 2009 brings many different and unique events to the Chicago History Museum. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the museum will present readings and musical performances that reflect Dr. King’s messages of peace and justice. Project Sunday brings the film Chicago 10 for viewers to enjoy. And, Great Chicago Stories is a seminar that everyone with an interest in the city’s history should attend. Fashion Chicago Style. @ Chicago History Museum

The month of December always gets bogged down with holiday events. But at the Chicago History Museum, December will be a time to discuss fashion. Join a panel of African American fashion designers as they discuss their work as well as the fashion industry for Fashion Chicago Style. Panelists include Barbara Bates, Barbara Samuels, Leigh Jones, Jermikko Shoshanna, and Reginald Thomas and is moderated by Micah Materre. This event is presented by The History Makers, and is associated with the exhibition Chic Chicago: Couture Treasures from the Chicago History Museum.
