Theaster Gates @ Milwaukee Art Museum

In this exhibition, contemporary Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates Jr. explores the history and legacy of Dave Drake aka Dave the Potter. A slave in antebellum South Carolina, Drake produced stoneware pottery and famously adorned his pots with poetic couplets. Though art historians have explored Drake’s career in detail, Gates is the first artist to reinterpret his work and to make it pertinent to a broader set of concerns about the place of labor and craft in present-day America.

We worked with MAM last month promoting their Raphael: The Woman with the Veil, and ae excited about their latest exhibit which will be in place throughout the summer. Be sure to check it out.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar @ Chicago Children's Theatre

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites draws upon the magic of black light and fluorescent puppet creations to capture the charm of three favorite Eric Carle stories. A Very Hungry Caterpillar encounters wonderful adventures as he progresses through an amazing variety of foods towards his eventual metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly.

We always enjoy working with Chicago Children’s Theatre and their family themed productions. We’ve begun distributing materials for Hungry Caterpillar, and you’ve probably seen them around town by now. Be sure to bring your family to see this fun filled production!

The Broadway hit is finally here! Billy Elliot the Musical makes it’s way to Chicago this spring for an extended stay. Billy Elliot is the heartwarming celebration of one young boy’s triumph against the odds. Set in a small mining town, the story follows Billy’s journey as he stumbles out of a boxing ring and into a ballet class and discovers his dream to dance.

You might remember not too long ago we did a promotion for the Billy Elliot onsale. We had staff members with banner packs targeting commuters and holiday shoppers with handbills. Now, we will be staring retail distribution of promo materials throughout the city. If you haven’t done so yet, get your tickets right away for what is sure to be the hit musical of the year!

Explore a whole world of mythology in this new musical by award winning playwright Nambi E. Kelley.

We’ve been working regularly with the Lifeline Theatre on both The Last of the Dragons and Mrs. Caliban. We are in the midst of an aggressive guerrilla marketing campaign for The Blue Shadow, distributing promotional materials throughout the city and northshore suburbs.

Because it is still pretty chilly out, it’s hard to imagine summertime, which seems like it’s light years away. But our friends at SAIC are already planning various summer camps for the entire family to enjoy. Starting in June, SAIC will begin a variety of programs and curriculum for your youngsters. Classes include multimedia, fashion, and other art forms.

Set in 1959 in Buffalo, New York, Over the Tavern tells the story of Catholics Chet and Ellen who live above their tavern with their four teenagers. When their 12-year-old son Rudy questions the Roman Catholic Church to ruler-cracking Sister Clarissa before his confirmation, the outcome is a hilarious yet touching comedy.

We’ll be making trips out to the suburbs in order to deliver posters and handbills to retail shops, restaurants, and other high visibility locations in order to help get the word out on Over the Tavern. Rosemont Theatre has ben keeping us VERY busy this week as we visit children’s and family friendly locations throughout the North Shore suburbs, NW suburbs, and the city to support the upcoming Yo Gabba Gabba performance at Rosemont Theatre. The series premiered in 2007 and has since become a TV sensation. My son loves it and I have to say, I’ve begun to enjoy it as well. They have a great series of guests and their sets and concepts are allot of fun. I’m not sure what the Live show has in store but you can bet that my son will be there with Dad in tow.

Blue Man Group Expands Schedule for the Holidays

Blue Man Group is by no means new to Chicago and their current residence at Briar Street Theatre is a must see for tourists and residents alike. We recently completely a small poster distribution for Blue Man Group announcing their expanded holiday schedule.There are now four shows on Friday and four shows on Sunday through Saturday, January 2nd. There are also additional shows added the week leading up to and proceeding Christmas.

Keep a lookout for the red and blue posters at your favorite neighborhood spots in Lincoln Park and Lakeview. We’re also very excited to have the posters printed at our very own direction printworks. Do you have an expanded holiday schedule that you need to spread the word about? Give us a call!

Harris Theater Family Series

The amount of family programming that Chicago has to offer is simply stunning and as a new parent, I’m excited to take advantage of all the great offers. The Harris Theater for Music and Dance returns with the Harris Family Series that kicks off next weekend (Saturday, November 7th) with a performance by our good friends at River North Dance Company. RNDC will be hand jiving and hustling through the history of dance. Each decade from the Roaring 20′s to the Hip-Hoppin’ 90′s is brought to life in costumes, narrative and fast footwork.

DJ Beethoven and the New Millenium Orchestra will be featured for the January installment (Saturday, January 30th) as they tackle the question, What is a DJ? Are DJ’s today’s composers? Was Beethoven one of the first? Come on this exciting trip with Francesco Milioto and his New Millennium Orchestra as he spins you through an urban electronic and orchestral mix of music.

Steppenwolf’s current season is off and running, and their newest production begins next week. Based on the novel by Chicago writer Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street is the touching and humorous story of a young girl growing up in one of Chicago’s culturally diverse neighborhoods. With over 130 artists showcased, including Thomas Yano, Sharon Goddard, and Cathy A. “Cat” Clausen, LEFA offers a variety of activities for attendees to enjoy. This month, we start promoting the upcoming production of Treasure Island at Lifeline Theatre. Based on the amazing tale by Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island follows the adventures of young Jim Hawkins, and his encounter with the infamous Long John Silver. Located in Rogers Park, Lifeline was founded in 1982, and is committed to promoting the arts in that neighborhood. We will be visiting Rogers Park, and the surrounding areas of Andersonville, Edgewater, and Uptown distributing promotional materials to local retailers, venues, restaurants, and other high traffic areas.

Every year when summer rolls along, I always ask “what’s happening at Millennium Park this year?” Since it’s opening 5 years ago, Millennium Park has become a staple when it comes to summertime in the city. This summer, there are a slew of events including the Music Without Borders Series, Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz, and the new Edible Audible Picnic, where free, eclectic, live musical performances are given at noon while people can enjoy their lunch. Dream: A Circus in One Act @ Actors Gymnasium

Dream is a family-friendly circus production that follows one man’s fantastic and surreal dream journey. This is our first endeavor with the Actors Gymnasium and we are excited to be working with them. We mounted a door to door distribution campaign in Evanston and the surrounding areas. “Conjunction Junction”, “I’m Just A Bill”, and all the favorites will be performed at the Wilmette Theatre as they present School House Rock Live. We are currently in the midst of a poster distribution campaign to help build awareness for the shows. Originally airing on ABC in the early 1970′s, School House Rock has gained cult notoriety and is still popular among kids today. Don’t miss the limited run; only 3 performances will occur this month.

School House Rock Live is at the Wilmette Theatre every Saturday this month beginning April 11th.

Kids Series @ Old Town School of Folk

Old Town School of Folk Music is known for it’s plethora of live performances and adult classes, but people forget that they have stellar kids programs as well. From music and theater to art and dance, OTSFM offers classes for kids in preschool all the way up to their late teens. This is a great, affordable opportunity for kids of all ages to flex their creative muscles. In order to promote this year’s kids’ series, direction will be distributing flyers throughout the Chicago-land area to various retail locations and venues. Be sure to pick one up, and get more info from OTSFM’s website.

The next series of kids’ classes begins March 2nd. Registration is currently open.

Everybody's Lincoln @ the Chicago History Museum

Honest Abe; 200 years later he is still considered one of the county’s greatest presidents. In contrast to our last elected “leader”, Lincoln was what we would call a history buff, believing those who don’t know it are doomed to repeat it. As part of the Chicago Historty Museum’s Lincoln Bicentennial, CHM presents the Everybody’s Lincoln Web Project. Upload pictories of yourself, friends, and family, to see how they’d look wearing Lincoln’s signature beard and top hat.

Everybody’s Lincoln begins February 12th along with other events and exhibitions.

Frozen Fun Fest @ Millennium Park

Usually February is a month reserved for staying indoors to hide from the intense, brutal cold Chicago offers. But, for one weekend, Millennium Park will coax families out of their homes in order to attend Frozen Fun Fest. Featuring a wide range of activities including ice skating and theatrical performances, Frozen Fun Fest is intended for families who are sick of being cooped up during the winter, and are looking to have some fun in the cold. And while the kids are making their way through the Ice Maze, parents can enjoy a warm beverage courtesy of Starbucks while they have their Ice Portraits taken. Frozen Fun Fest has something to offer for all members of the family.

Frozen Fun Fest takes place at the Chase Promenade at Millennium Park February 7th-8th 10am-4pm.

Grease @ the Auditorium Theatre

The classic stage production of Grease is headed back to the Auditorium for a limited run of performances. Whether you’ve seen it before, or if this is your first time, don’t miss Time magazine’s pick for 2007′s #1 musical while it’s in Chicago.

Grease opens Jan. 6th and runs through Jan. 18th at the Auditorium Theatre.

The Selfish Giant @ the Little Theater

For two years, Chicago Children’s Theatre has been presenting phenomenal productions for both children and families including A Year with Frog and Toad, 4-ish, and Go, Dog, Go. Now, to kick of the new year, CCT is excited to present The Selfish Giant at the Little Theater. In order to help promote this new show, direction is expanding it’s already famous “family route” to include locations in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. If you live in or around Hyde Park be sure to keep an eye out for our street team, and for Selfish Giant flyers in shops and boutiques everywhere.

The Selfish Giant is at the Little Theatre @ the Museum of Science and Industry from Jan. 18-March 1st.

The Snow Queen @ Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre

Returning for it’s third year here in Chicago, the Snow Queen is a wonderful holiday show for the entire family. Based on the classic tale by Hans Christian Anderson, the Snow Queen is brought to life on stage with a wonderous musical score and amazing puppetry that will entertain audiences of all ages. This is the first year since Victory Gardens has taken over the legendary Biograph, and looks like they will wrap up the year with much critial acclaim.

The Snow Queen is at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre from now until December 28th.

Amahl and the Night Visitors & Chamber Opera Chicago

Amahl and the night Visitors is the story of a crippled boy whose life changes forever when he sees an amazing star in the sky. Soon, three kings following the star encounter Amahl and his mother and miracles ensue. Chamber Opera Chicago is proud to present this classic tale for a limited time only, so be sure to venture out this weekend to see it.

Pooch on Scrooge @ the Goodman Theatre

Ever wanted to sit on Ebenezer Scrooge’s lap? Me neither, but your dog sure does! On November 29th, as part of their annual Christmas Carol production, the Goodman Theatre is offering the chance for people to bring in their pet to have their picture taken with Scrooge. This is another unique promotion we at direction are involved in with the Goodman, and because this event is “petcentric”, we’ll be hitting all of the establishments on our Pet Store Route to ensure that dog owners and lovers are in the know.

Pooch on Scrooge is at the Goodman Theatre on Nov. 29th from 9:30am-11:00am. A donation of $10 is recommended benefiting Season of Concern. Your dog must be leashed, and well behaved.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang @ The Chicago Theatre

As Christmas breezes through the city, holiday themed performances make their way into Chicago. One of them is Ian Flemming’s classic story of an inventor, his flying car, and the adventure that ensues.

We’ll be promoting Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and several other events all at the Lights Festival this Saturday. Events like this offer a fantastic opportunity to reach children and families and allow our brand ambassadors to personally connect with consumers and engage them in conversation about events and products.

Other upcoming events like this include the State Street Thanksgiving Day Parade, Holiday on the Plaza Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, and Mayor Daley’s Holiday Sports Festival. Sporting events are also a great place to promote and connect with consumers. The Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks are all in the middle of their respective seasons and present a wonderful opportunity to reach thousands of people.

Old Town School of Folk Music Kids' Concerts

Direction has worked with OTSFM for a number of years on a variety of projects. The Kid’s Concerts series is one of their most popular events, allowing children to come and enjoy songs by unique artists that you probably won’t find on any Kidz Bop compilations. November’s events look to be particularly exciting, with performances from Funkadesi, Kimya Dawson, and the Asylum Street Spankers. We’ll be hitting the streets distributing flyers at various shows, boutiques, and other places throughout the city, so be sure to check it out.

MCA's Family Days

We are very excited to be a part of MCA‘s Family Days, happening every second Saturday through January. Each Family Days allows parents and children to interact and participate in art related activities that vary from month to month. We will be distributing promotional magnets for these events at the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. Be sure to come out and grab a free magnet from one of our dedicated staffers.

Saturday Nov. 8th Find Your Voice-Coinciding with the exhibition, Jenny Holzer: PROTECT PROTECT, Find Your Voice asks kids to consider what freedom of expression means to them through posters, peace panels, and more.

Saturday Dec. 13th ‘Tis the Season-Celebrate the holiday season MCA-style by helping to let it snow — paper snowflakes, that is — while decorating cupcakes and sipping delicious hot chocolate.

Saturday Jan. 10th Found in Translation-Jenny Holzer and Joseph Grigely explore the relationship between art, language and ideas. Families draw inspiration from these artists and create word art such as poems that create animal shapes, and more.

If you’re a proud parent, be sure to set some family time aside for one or all of those Saturdays!
