The Convert @ Goodman Theatre

Being forced to choose between family and god isn’t new. Set in 1895 southern Africa, “The Convert,” an upcoming work at the Goodman, tells the story of Jekesai, a young woman who has escaped a forced marriage thanks to a man of Christianity. This leads her to becoming the Christian’s protege, something that puts her at odds with her family. When an anti-colonialism uprising brews, she’s forced to choose between the two sides.

The direction team has been distributing posters and handbills, produced in house, throughout Edgewater, Rogers Park and Uptown with a focus on Chicago’s African population.

Race @ Goodman Theater

David Mamet’s newest controversial work, “Race” has begun its month long run at the Goodman. After a year of a critically acclaimed, sold out run on Broadway, the play is being staged with direction by Chuck Smith. Two lawyers, one black, one white, are hired to defend a wealthy white man charged with the sexual assault of an African-American female. The prejudices of each character is explored in a play that could only be written by Mamet.

The direction staff has been hanging posters and distributing handbills for this short run throughout the more theater friendly neighborhoods of Chicago’s north and south sides.

“Race” will be at the Goodman until February 19. Interested parties are encouraged to purchase tickets quickly. Most shows are likely to sell out. Visit goodmantheatre.org for seats and more.

A Christmas Carol @ Goodman Theatre

The Chicago holiday tradition returns to the Goodman this week. “A Christmas Carol” will be spreading holiday cheer and magic until the end of the year. For over thirty years the Goodman has been part of family traditions, telling the Charles Dickens’ classic story of an old man rediscovering his soul.

The direction staff has been distributing handbills and hanging posters throughout the north side of Chicago for this production made to be seen by the entire family.

Red @ Goodman Theatre

If the paintings of Mark Rothko ever captured your imagination, “Red” may be for you. Set during the two years it took artist Rothko to paint his set of murals for Manhattan’s Four Seasons, “Red” tells the story of the artist at his commercial height. After a critically acclaimed run in New York, Chicago theater goers will get to see the Goodman’s take on this new play.

The direction staff has been distributing posters and handbills for this upcoming production throughout the north side of Chicago.

Chinglish @ Goodman Theatre

David Henry Hwang, the writer of “M. Butterfly,” has written a new comedy about cultural differences. “Chinglish” is about a Midwestern American businessman who is in China, trying to push his business along in a new market. The problems are his translators aren’t too reliable, his partners may be lying and he’s becoming intriguiged by a beautiful government official. This is the world premiere of the play and it’ll only be running for a limited time until it heads to New York. In addition to “Chinglish,” the Goodman Theatre and Silk Road Theatre Project is currently staging Hwang’s work, “Yellow Face,” as a companion piece.

The direction staff has been distributing promotional materials for this Goodman Theatre production throughout theater loving neighborhoods on the north side and on our Chinatown route.

Yellow Face @ The Historic Chicago Temple Building

Just because race is a difficult subject to address doesn’t mean artists should leave it alone. “Yellow Face” is writer David Henry Hwang’s, JEFF Awards recommended play about race. It’s an attempt to discuss discomfort in casting along with the dillemma of telling other artists what they should or shouldn’t do. The Chicago Tribune has praised the play. “It offers one of the very few frank and humorous explorations of a topic that tends to be taboo in artistic circles, and a dangerously mined sea in which smarter people know not to wade. As such, it is positively cathartic.” In addition to “Yellow Face,” the Goodman Theatre is currently staging Hwang’s new work, “Chinglish,” as a companion piece.

The direction team has been distributing promotional materials for this Silk Road Theatre Project and Goodman Theatre production throughout theater going neighborhoods on the north side and on our Chinatown route.

Stage Kiss @ Goodman Theatre

Life imitates art or the other way around. The story of two former loves starring in a 1930s melodrama playing current lovers leads to, well, maybe love. This new comedy by MacArthur “Genius” Grant winner Sarah Ruhl, “Stage Kiss” is about what happens before, during and after what happens on stage. This world premier production is one of the reasons the Goodman is known as the place for groundbreaking Chicago theater.

The direction team has been putting up posters and distributing fliers to our normal Chicago theater loving routes. We’ve expanded our Goodman coverage to include the north shore suburbs.

El Nogolar @ Goodman Theatre

The Goodman Theatre and Teatro Vista are currently staging “El Nogolar.” Written by Tanya Saracho and directed by Cecilie D. Keenan, the play is about the Galvin family. New City recommends the show saying, “Tanya Saracho’s reworking of Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” as “El Nogalar” (The Pecan Orchard) crafts a more complex and colorful picture of a nation not only in a constant struggle to come to terms with its neighbor to the north, for sure, but also with its own troubled past and present.”

The direction team has focused on distributing materials to Chicago’s Hispanic neighborhoods including Pilsen, Little Village, West Lawn, Back of the Yards and more.

One of the most highly praised comedic plays in recent memory is running at the Goodman Theatre. After a highly successful Broadway run that merited the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy and three Tony Awards, including Best Play, “God of Carnage” will be in Chicago for the next month. Time Out Chicago has said, “Snyder and his crack quartet of actors masterfully maneuver among the play’s shifting loyalties and increasingly over-the-top recriminations as the parents slip from surface civility into increasingly childish psychological blows of their own.”

The Trinity River Plays @ Goodman Theatre

Regina Taylor is about to debut her new play trilogy in Chicago this month at the Goodman. “Jar Fly”, “Rain” and “Ghoststory” tell the story of Iris Spears. “Jar Fly” covers her teen years and their lost innocence. “Rain” presents Iris as a 34-year old in a failing marriage who just wants to go back home. The final piece, “Ghoststory”, gives us Iris looking back and examining her life. The Dallas Morning News has called the trilogy, “sprawling, florid, earthy and abundantly alive.”

Direction and direction printworks is handling both the printing and distribution of promotional materials for The Trinity River Plays.

A Christmas Carol @ Goodman Theatre

The annual tradition “A Christmas Carol” returns to the Goodman Theatre this year with a brand new Ebenezer Scrooge. Chicago’s own John Judd will play the role of the classic curmudgeon. Director William Brown returns for his fourth year. The production has been performed annually for over thirty years. It’s a show in which the Chicago Tribune said “magic took over the show.”

In addition to spreading the word and good cheer throughout the city, direction printworks also handled the production of promotional materials.

Come to the Goodman Theatre and let your dog be the centerpiece of your next Christmas Card. The Theatre is hosting their annual “Pooch on Scrooge” event in a few weeks and you know you want to be there. Dogs will have their photo taken with Ebenezer Scrooge. It’s only the cutest thing ever.

The Good Negro @ Goodman Theatre

This gripping new play uncovers the human story at the heart of the 1960s American Civil Rights Movement. Tensions build in the increasingly hostile South as a trio of emerging black leaders attempts to conquer their individual demons amid death threats from the Ku Klux Klan and wire taps by the FBI. Through personal and intimate stories inspired by the political upheavals of the era, The Good Negro examines the human frailties behind the historic headlines.

A True History of the Johnstown Flood introduces us to The Baxter Theatre Troupe who have been summoned to perform at an exclusive resort next to a beautiful man-made lake in the Pennsylvania mountains. When a violent rainstorm compromises the lake’s shoddily constructed dam, the resulting disaster lays bare the tragic inequities of the rigid class system-and paves the way for a seismic change in both theater and society.

Two years ago, seven of our country’s most eminent Asian-American playwrights were invited by Chicago’s Silk Road Theatre Project to take a voyage through their own pasts, via a simple test of their DNA. The results of those journeys, and the questions that arose concerning heritage, ancestry, identity and the perils of such explorations, are the basis of a fascinating evening of new short plays.

Just in time for the start of the new year, this double dose of Brian Dennehy makes its way to the Goodman Theatre. First up is Hughie, the story of high-rolling gambler Erie (Brian Dennehy) and Hughie (Joe Grifasi), the credulous night clerk at his apartment building. Next is Krapp’s Last Tape, Samuel Beckett’s classic one-act, one-man show about a man celebrating his 69th birthday, and his annual tradition of making a recording of himself for the occasion.

We are distributing posters advertising both shows all over the Chicago area. Being huge Dennehy fans here at the office, it goes without saying that we are very excited to be working with the Goodman on this project. Be sure to get your tickets before they’re gone!

The Goodman Theatre and their production of Dickens’s A Christmas Carol are at it again this year with another opportunity for you to dress up your pup in their best holiday garb for a digital portrait with Scrooge. High Holidays at the Goodman Theatre

This Saturday, the world premier of Alan Gross’s High Holidays will be opening in the Owen Theatre at the Goodman. This darkly comic, boisterous look at growing up in the Chicago suburbs during the early sixties is the story of 13-year old Billy Roman and the rollicking, anxiety-riddled preparations for his Bar Mitzvah. When Billy’s rebellious older brother returns from college during the Jewish high holidays, his family—the little Roman Empire—begins to wobble and crack as it is forced to examine some hard truths about coming of age in America.

Dael Orlandersmith’s amazing solo performance Stoop Stories has been getting rave reviews since it’s debut earlier this month at the Goodman Theatre. Orlandersmith brings the diverse cast of her Harlem neighborhood characters to life on stage in this exciting production. We began a poster distribution throughout the city before the show’s opening in order to help build the public’s awareness. Only a couple of weeks remain, so be sure to see the show DC Theatre Scene calls “…a spellbinding performance.”

Boleros for the Disenchanted @ Goodman Theatre

Over a month ago, we began a poster distribution campaign for Goodman Theatre’s production Boleros for the Disenchanted. Written by José Rivera, Oscar-nominated screenwriter of The Motorcycle Diaries, Boleros is a “bittersweet and ultimately uplifting story about what it takes for two people to make a life together far from home.” Come see the show the Chicago Sun Times described as ”Highly Recommended.”

Rock 'n' Roll @ Goodman Theatre

The Goodman is known for their elaborate and diverse shows. Now, Rock ‘n’ Roll comes to the stage. Spanning 3 generations, it tells a love story synced to a classic soundtrack that includes The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, U2, John Lennon, and The Doors just to name a few. The Goodman brings six of O’Neil’s productions to life by six different theatre companies from around the world. Ever wanted to sit on Ebenezer Scrooge’s lap? Me neither, but your dog sure does! On November 29th, as part of their annual Christmas Carol production, the Goodman Theatre is offering the chance for people to bring in their pet to have their picture taken with Scrooge. This is another unique promotion we at direction are involved in with the Goodman, and because this event is “petcentric”, we’ll be hitting all of the establishments on our Pet Store Route to ensure that dog owners and lovers are in the know.

Pooch on Scrooge is at the Goodman Theatre on Nov. 29th from 9:30am-11:00am. A donation of $10 is recommended benefiting Season of Concern. Your dog must be leashed, and well behaved.
