The Trocks @ Harris Theater

The Trocks are an all-male ballet troupe featuring world class dancers on point. Sure, it’s campy and fun but it also presents a plethora of athletic and artistic ability. Their performance of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo for one night at the Harris Theater is for the dance fan and novice alike.

The direction staff has been distributing handbills and hanging “Boys Night Out” and “Girls Night Out” posters for this ballet on our GLBT specialty routes and throughout the north side of Chicago.

An Evening with The Trocks will be at the Harris Theater on Tuesday, January 24. Tickets for this one night only performance will likely sell out. Christian McBride @ Chicago Jazz Ensemble

2011 Bassist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, Christian McBride will be sharing the stage with singer, rapper and electric bassist Meshell Ndegeocello to celebrate the 1978 collaboration between Charles Mingus and Joni Mitchell. The Chicago Jazz Ensemble is presenting this special event at the Harris Theater and letting the public get to know both performers in the days prior to the concert with Listening Sessions, artists interviews with panels of jazz experts that are open to the public.

The direction team has been distributing posters and handbills for these Chicago Jazz Ensemble shows on our southside route and our jazz specialty route which covers parts of the city and suburbs.

Christian McBride will be part of Listening Session on Wednesday, January 18 at a location TBD at noon which is free and open to the public. Jennifer Holliday @ Harris Theater

The original ‘Dreamgirl’ Jennifer Holliday is bringing her holiday show to the Harris Theater next week. The Tony and Grammy award winner has a voice to remember. For the last few decades she’s gone from Broadway to R & B to gospel, thriving in each style. Her one night only stop in Chicago is holiday specific, guaranteeing to leave the crowd elated with soaring voices and holiday cheer. The Soul Children of Chicago, a gospel choir made up of Chicago children will open the show.

The direction staff has distributed posters and handbills throughout the south side of Chicago and hand to hand at shows from Sinbad, Ledisi, Kirk Franklin and Anthony Hamilton.

Harold and the Purple Crayon @ Harris Theater

“Harold and the Purple Crayon” was staged by the Hubbard Street Dance Company for the first time last year. The performances garnered critical acclaim and sold out shows. This weekend’s shows look to do the same. With music by Andrew Bird, “Harold and the Purple Crayon” is an interpretive dance of the beloved 1955 children’s book. For children and adults alike, “Harold” has a much too short run.

The direction team has been promoting this children’s performance at the Harris Theater with poster and handbill distribution on our family routes in the city and suburbs and our dance specialty routes. We were also at the Magnificent Mile Festival of Lights handing out fliers to the crowd.

The Harris Theater is home to some of the best dance in the country. They stage artistic feats on a regular basis, wowing season ticket holders and elevating Chicago’s place as a home to the arts. The theater also opens its doors to the little ones. The Family Series is bringing “Harold and the Purple Crayon: A Dance Adventure” to the stage this December. Performed last year to sold out audiences, the show is based on the classic children’s book.

Merce Cunningham Dance Company @ Harris Theater

In addition to being a school for future dancers, The Dance Center of Columbia College also brings in some of the best companies from around the world. This month the Merce Cunningham Dance Company will be performing over two nights, featuring five separate works from legendary choreographer Cunningham. Night one includes “Squaregame” from 1976, “Quartet” from 1982 and “Antic Meet” from 1958. Night two will showcase “Roaratorio,” an evening-length largescale work set to John Cage’s complex 1979 composition “Roaratorio,” an Irish Circus on “Finnegans Wake,” consisting of music, text and sounds from places in James Joyce’s novel.

Diego El Cigala @ Harris Theater

Diego El Cigala is a treasure of the Flamenco community. Both of his parents played as well as his grandparents. Since the age of 12 he’s been in the spotlight, wowing audiences of all ages. The Miami Herald has hailed him as, “The Frank Sinatra of Flamenco.” This upcoming performance will highlight his recent album that was recorded at the legendary Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires.

The direction team has been promoting this OTSFM event at the Harris Theater by taking out handbills on our concierge route.

2011 Giordano Jazz Dance Company Fall Engagement

Since 1963 the Giordano Jazz Dance Company has been on the forefront of modern dance. In the nearly 50 years they’ve been performing, they’ve toured throughout four continents, been televised throughout America and each year acts as host of the Jazz Dance World Congress in Washington D.C. This well respected, much loved company will be performing “Passion and Fire” at the Harris later this month. After selling out Carnegie Hall, the Sphinx Virtuosi is stopping for a one night only performance in Chicago. The group will be showcasing nine pieces from the likes of Handel, Vivaldi, Schubert and more. In addition to the internationally acclaimed group, the evening will also include solo performances from violinist Randall Goosby and cellist Gabriel Cabezas, a Chicago native, and violinist Allie Switala.

Hubbard Street Dance Fall Series @ Harris Theater

The three programs that make up the 2011 Hubbard Street Dance Fall Series include a madcap comedy, the only U.S. company to ever perform a work from Nacho Duato and the world premiere of a new work from Twyla Tharp. The dance legend is debuting this work for the Hubbard for only four days in October.

We’ve been taking out materials for these Allied Live produced events throughout Chicago and on our specialty dance route. Direction printworks handled the production of materials for this new client.

I am a big Alan Cumming fan. Any actor that’s able to stand out in “X2″ and “The Good Wife” is someone I enjoy. This thespian/Broadway star/actor/all around interesting guy is bringing his new one man show, “I Bought a Blue Car Today,” to the Harris Theater for one night only. Don’t miss out on seeing someone that has been a presenter for “Masterpiece Mystery” and the villain in “Josie and the Pussycats” (a highly underrated film, I’m not joking) live and in the flesh.

This weekend the River North Dance Chicago is bringing their annual Valentine’s Day perfomances to the Harris Theater. The Chicago Sun-Times has said, “this is one sleek, confident, athletic, daring, versatile company that easily can compete with the best of them.” The night includes a variety of different performances. This weekend will feature “Al Sur del Sur”, a world premiere, a sizzling suite of tangos, “Duets”, a combination of Artistic Director Frank Chaves’ most passionate, sensual and playful pairings and “Evolution of a Dream”, set to “Sweet Dreams” by Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart and his Rock Fabulous Orchestra. In addition to these three performances other favorites from the RNDC repertoire will be staged.

The ground-breaking dance troupe Pilobolus is coming to Chicago for only two performances. The gymnasts/dancers work together to form intricate objects. It sounds simple. It’s not. They’re currently celebrating their fortieth year of jaw-dropping feats. They’ve received glowing reviews from The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and more.

The Chicago Jazz Ensemble performs at the Harris Theater on January 20. Music director Dana Hall and special guest conductor Jon Faddis will lead the musicians in performances of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington numbers. Faddis will be returning to lead the ensemble after leaving this past May. Be sure you don’t miss out on this reunion and celebration.

Groundbreaking audio and visual artist Laurie Anderson returns to the Harris Theater to perform her new performance art piece, “Delusion,” commissioned by the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad and the Barbican Centre, London. Anderson is a one-of-a-kind artist and this production is no different. Jumping between short, mystery plays, the piece is about the everyday, the mythic, the fantastic and fact.

Everyone’s favorite Baltimore bred cult director John Waters is coming to the Harris Theater for one night only. The personality will perform the Chicago premier of his critically-acclaimed one man show, “A John Waters Christmas”. The New York Post has said the production, “Puts the “X back in X-Mas” and would you expect anything else? Don’t miss what the holidays are like from the mind that brought you “Pink Flamingos”, “Cry-Baby” and “Hairspray”.

The Ensemble Espanol Center will bring Dame Libby’s masterpiece “Bolero” to the Harris Theater this week as part of Global Rhythms VI and the Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s 20th anniversary. The premier Spanish dance company is a new client of ours and we’re proud to be working with them. Since 1976 they’ve been sharing the cultural traditions of Spain and now we’re spreading their word.

The first concert series in the United States spotlighting American tap and contemporary percussion arts companies, Global Rhythms comes to the Harris Theater at the end of the month. The Chicago Human Rhythm Project ends their 2010 year with a performance that shares 50% of its proceeds with more than 50 Chicago area non-profits. Thanks to the Thanks4Giving program a night out on the town will do more good than ever before.

The Chicago Jazz Ensemble is honoring one of America’s musical centers, New Orleans, with a performance at the Harris Theater on November 18. Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, “The King of Nouveau Swing” saxophonist Donald Harrison and eight-time W.C. Handy award winner pianist Henry Butler will perform contemporary interpretations of songs from legendary New Orleans musicians. Numbers written by Louis Prima, King Oliver, Duke Ellington and more will be interpreted.

In addition to spreading the word about this concert to music fans, direction printworks has also handled some additional printing.

Violinist Gidon Kremer is bringing the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra to the Harris Theater for a one-time performance. The orchestra is comprised of young artists that hail from the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Come experience some world class music from musicians that hail half-way around the world.

In order to reach out to Chicago’s Baltic community direction developed a new Lithuanian route. We also handled the printing of posters at direction printworks.

The performance on November 13 will be a new piece by highly in demand choreographer Sidra Bell.

If you’re a dance virgin and don’t know where to begin, Ballet Hispanico is for you. The production brings together ballet, modern dance and all types of Latin dance into a amalgam of Hispanic dancing. The New York Post has said “Ballet Hispanico knows what it’s doing and does it with style.” After watching a preview for the show, I think it’s hard to disagree.

A Halloween event for the music lover, the Harris Theater is celebrating Maestro Paul Freeman’s final year as Music Director with a concert honoring the dearly departed. Guest conductor Hector Guzman will be leading the orchestra through seven compositions, each highlighting Latino cultures for the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos.

We’ve been focusing our street promotion throughout Chicago’s diverse Hispanic population. For the past week our staff has been to every pocket of this city distributing materials for this one time only performance.

Robert Battle, returns to River North Chicago to follow 2008’s exhilarating Train with the world premiere of Ella, celebrating the scat vocals of Ella Fitzgerald. The amount of family programming that Chicago has to offer is simply stunning and as a new parent, I’m excited to take advantage of all the great offers. The Harris Theater for Music and Dance returns with the Harris Family Series that kicks off next weekend (Saturday, November 7th) with a performance by our good friends at River North Dance Company. RNDC will be hand jiving and hustling through the history of dance. Each decade from the Roaring 20′s to the Hip-Hoppin’ 90′s is brought to life in costumes, narrative and fast footwork.

DJ Beethoven and the New Millenium Orchestra will be featured for the January installment (Saturday, January 30th) as they tackle the question, What is a DJ? Are DJ’s today’s composers? Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s 20th Anniversary Season performs their Chicago debut of Washington D.C.’s celebrated Step Afrika! featuring stepping, gumboot, African and contemporary percussive arts. A few weeks ago, we did a massive one off distribution at the Stomp Out event at Chicago State University as part of the Chicago Football Classic. People at the event were very excited to hear about these upcoming performances, so don’t be surprised if all three nights end up selling out!

Step Afrika! is at the Harris Theater November 19th, 20th & 21st.

Pam Ann, A-list Air hostess to the stars, touches down for her first US Tour. The alter ego of comedian Caroline Reid, Pam Ann has played sold out shows on major UK tours, at the Edinburgh Festival, and sold out shows in Canada and Europe. We are in the middle of a huge flyer and poster distribution before Pam Ann’s Chicago debut this Sunday. Tickets are still available, so get yours before it’s too late!

Last week, we ran a promotion for the Harris Theater in order to help spread the word on the upcoming performance by Orquestra De Sao Paulo. The Harris Theater and Access Living are proud to present the Chicago premiere of the most outstanding orchestra in Latin America performing with world-renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. This one night only event happening on Monday is not to be missed!

Chicago Dancing Festival 2009 @ Millennium Park

This year, the Chicago Dancing Festival descends upon the Harris Theatre, MCA, and Millennium Park in August. Programs include New Voices, Modern Masters, Workshops, Celebration of American Dance. This week, we are doing a massive poster distribution throughout the city to gear up for all of these exciting events. We’ve concentrated our efforts on the south and west sides of Chicago, so keep an eye out for four different posters of the festival. It’s only here for a week, so be sure to check it out!

The Chicago Dancing Festival takes place August 18th-22nd.

Roberto Benigni brings his critically acclaimed one man stage performance TuttoDante to the U.S.! Inspired by Dante’s “Divine Comedy”, TuttoDante begins with current events including Benigni’s personal memoirs. We’re helping the Harris Theater promote this highly anticipated performance through our various streetmarketing initiatives. Benigni is best known for his 1997 role in “Life Is Beautiful” which won 3 Oscars.

River North Chicago Dance Co.

River North Chicago Dance Company is dedicated to preserving and advancing contemporary jazz dance. For Valentine’s Day this year RNCDC will be presenting three world premier performances: Company dancer Monique Haley will present “Uhuru”, a full company piece featuring an afrobeat style of music. Artistic Director Frank Chaves will debut a group piece, “Tuscan Rift”, set to music by Rene Aubry and Andrew Bird, and a signature style duet entitled “Sentir em Nos (Even for Us)”. RNCDC is known for their magnificent performances, and these will be no exception.

In order to tell people about their $5 Lar Lubovitch show, Harris Theater contacted us to hit the streets and spread the word. With only 24 hours notice, we were able to assemble street teams to pass out materials around Michigan & Randolph and we are confident that our efforts helped better inform people around the area of the performance. Because direction is based in Chicago, we are able to orginize at a moments notice in order to meet our clients needs. If you missed today’s performance, don’t worry. You still have a chance this weekend to see it.

Lar Lubovitch performs this Saturday at 1:00pm and 7:30pm at the Harris Theater.

The Chicago Human Rhythm Project is always bringing new and innovative dance from around the world. Their latest endeavour features Barbatuques, who combine Afro-Brazilian chants, body drumming, video montage and pulsating rhythms into a mind blowing experience. This is our third year working together with CHRP, and for this show, you can get 30% off the ticket price with one of our many postcards we will be distributing throughout the city.
