Theaster Gates @ Milwaukee Art Museum

May 05 2010

10_theastergatesIn this exhibition, contemporary Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates Jr. explores the history and legacy of Dave Drake aka Dave the Potter. A slave in antebellum South Carolina, Drake produced stoneware pottery and famously adorned his pots with poetic couplets. Though art historians have explored Drake’s career in detail, Gates is the first artist to reinterpret his work and to make it pertinent to a broader set of concerns about the place of labor and craft in present-day America.

We worked with MAM last month promoting their Raphael: The Woman with the Veil, and ae excited about their latest exhibit which will be in place throughout the summer. Be sure to check it out.

Theaster Gates’ exhibition will be at the Milwaukee Art Museum through August 1st. Please visit www.mam.org for more information.
