Theatre for a New Audience, the first U.S. based theatre company to be invited to the Royal Shakespeare Company, is staging “The Merchant of Venice.” The controversial and classic play is coming off of performances Off-Broadway and in Stratford-Upon-Avon. Shylock is being played by Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham (“Amadeus,” “Scarface”) and the play is directed by Darko Tesnjak, the former Artistic Director at the Old Globe. “The New York Times” said, “Mr. Tresnjak and his superb cast allow us to see with unusual clarity the light and the dark in Shakespeare’s characters, not just the wronged but vengeful Shylock and his nemesis, the casually bigoted Antonio (Tom Nelis), but also the wise, loving Portia (Kate MacCluggage), who sees fit to test her husband’s love with unnecessary calculation, and comparatively insignificant players like the servant Launcelot Gobbo (a spirited, funny Jacob Ming-Trent).”
Direction has been plastering posters throughout the city to promote this Broadway in Chicago production.
“The Merchant of Venice” runs today until March 27 at the Bank of America Theatre. Please visit broadwayinchicago.com for tickets and more information.

The kids are home from school today. It’s great. For a day. It’s time to think about whay they can do during the summer months. The Northlight Student Series returns this summer. Kids of all ages participate in professional theatre training in addition to classic camp activities. The camp ends with a public showcase for friends and family performed by all campers on the Northlight stage. Unlike most camps, this one includes guests from the Steppenwolf, Goodman, Shakespeare, Lookingglass and Northlight Theatres. If your child is interested or already loves theater, there isn’t a better way to spend the summer.
Direction put the word out for this camp on our northshore kids route.
Camp Northlight is currently accepting campers. Hurry now to receive a early enrollment savings. Please visit northlight.org for more information.

Shakespeare’s classic comedy about mistaken identity is brought to life on stage at Navy Pier. This hilarious tale is one of Shakespeare’s most popular and well known stories, and was adapted into the movie She’s the Man. But, skip the cheesy teen comedy remake, and check out the much superior, original live version. Today marks the beginning of our poster distribution and flyer distribution for this Chicago Shakespeare Theatre production. Twelfth Night is directed by Josie Rourke.
Twelfth Night is at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in the Jentes Family Auditorium March 29th through June 7th.

Steppenwolf ensemble member Tina Landau re-imagines Shakespeare’s final magical tale, The Tempest. Ensemble member Frank Galati returns to the stage as Prospero, the revenge driven main character. This is Galati’s first performance at Steppenwolf since The Drawer Boy with John Mahoney in 2001, and it is Steppenwolf’s first Shakespeare production. We are campaigning throughout the city executing poster and flyer distributions in support of the show. Be sure to stay after the performances for a post show discussion with members of the Steppenwolf artistic staff, sponsored by AT&T.
The Tempest is at the Steppenwolf in the Downstairs Theatre March 26th through May 31st.
