Time Stands Still @ Steppenwolf Theatre

Journalists don’t like to stop. It’s one of the reasons they chose to always be chasing leads, nailing sources, getting the shot. When photojournalist Sarah Goodwin is forced to slow down, come back home and face her family and friends, she has to reconsider whether life makes more sense in a domestic setting or in war fields.

The direction staff has been taking promotional materials for the Steppenwolf on routes throughout the north side and more theater friendly neighborhoods of the south side.

Penelope @ Steppenwolf Theatre

The newest work from Irish playwright Edna Walsh is coming to the Steppenwolf at the beginning of next month. Directed by ensemble member Amy Morton and featuring ensemble members Ian Barford, John Mahoney and Yasen Peyankov, “Penelope” is about four men vying for the love of Penelope, who’s waiting for her husband to return from war. The play is likely to be yet another small Steppenwolf production that turns into a critical and commercial success.

The direction staff has been distributing posters and handbills for “Penelope” throughout the north side of Chicago and some more theater loving suburban spots.

“Penelope” will be in the Downstairs Theatre at the Steppenwolf from December 1 to February 5. $30 preview tickets are available for a limited time. Clybourne Park @ Steppenwolf Theatre

The winner of this years Pulitzer Prize for Drama, “Clybourne Park” has recently opened at the Steppenwolf. Written by Bruce Norris, this critically acclaimed newer work comes home to the setting of the play. In 1959 a white family sells their house to the first black family on the block. In 2009 a white couple moves in to the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. A recent four star review in the Chicago Tribune said the play, “understands and explicates the roots of hate in fear. There is nothing smug or distant or cheap about the authorial voice: It is compassionate and it takes responsibility, even as it is relentless in its peeling of the racial onion, down to its fetid core.”

2011-12 The Scene

The new season of The Scene has begun. Targeted towards teens and young adults, The Scene is a program the Steppenwolf Theatre runs so a new generation of theater goers and lovers exist. The company is staging special performances of “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” Penelope,” “Time Stands Still” and more. All shows take place on Saturday or Sunday and most are in the afternoon, making it easy to chauffeur your teen into Chicago.

Direction has distributed materials for The Scene on our specialty youth route near high schools around Chicago.

Middletown @ Steppenwolf Theatre

The Steppenwolf Theatre is currently staging Will Eno’s new play, “Middletown.” Mary Swanson has just moved to a new town. She wants to begin a family in and get to know her neighbors. Those things are on track until she meets John Dodge. Things are starting to seem not so small town. “Middletown” is about two people, two versions of one town and what lies beneath both of them.

Samuel J. and K. @ Steppenwolf Theatre

Two-time recipient of the Jerome Fellowship from The Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis, Naperville, Illinois native Mat Smart penned this new play which is now running at the Steppenwolf Theatre as part of their Young Adults program. “Samuel J. and K.” tells the story of two brothers, one black and one white. To celebrate the older brothers graduation, he buys two round trip plane tickets to the younger brothers birthplace in Africa. The trip brings up issues of identity, race and family secrets.

Tomorrow is the first snow day for all CPS schools in twelve years. Your teenager will be home. Rather than dwell on that fact, think about what they could be doing. The Steppenwolf Theatre Company opens their doors to teenagers with their The Scene program. The Young Adult Council stages productions specifically for teenagers. The audience interacts with the cast, crew and each other. To make the deal even sweeter, tickets to the events also include a dinner.

“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” is currently playing in the Downstairs Theatre at the Steppenwolf. Come witness one of the most dysfunctional theater couples of all-time bicker and brawl in Edward Albee’s classic work. This is the first production Albee is allowing the Steppenwolf to stage. Not many masterpieces will make you happy you’re not part of the couple on stage.

Bee is a young woman who believes she has the uncanny ability to see the future, and maybe even alter it. With the click of a television remote, we loop through time in this dark, funny world premiere about a woman bent on reinventing her own destiny, and possibly, the world.

Pestered by his parents, Hamm directs this unusual family through their daily rituals, awaiting the end of everything. Swerving from the magnificent to the minuscule and from the profound to the profoundly ridiculous, a powerful all-ensemble cast brings to life this epic tale.

The Young Adult Council is a unique after-school program for passionate and motivated high school students who want to learn the inner-workings of professional theatre from the most celebrated artists in the city. In addition to invaluable face-time with these leading professionals, Council members attend the best plays in Chicago, learn how to analyze and speak about these plays, and organize events for their peers.

We are utilizing our youth route in order to distribute posters advertising this program around high schools, and high school hangouts in the city of Chicago. We’ve worked with Steppenwolf before on similar projects involving youth, and we enjoy helping to offer special programs like these to future stars of the stage.

The Brother/Sister Plays: Campus Coverage

We had previously mentioned The Brother/Sister Plays in one of our other posts. The Steppenwolf productions has been receiving rave reviews since it began, and now, we are looking to help increase the fan base even more. We are working closely with Steppenwolf to distribute materials throughout college campuses in Chicago. Our handbills offer $15 tickets for all students for the Brother/Sister performances. Steppenwolf brings a new and exciting production to it’s stage! Written by Tarell Alvin McCraney, The Brother/Sister Plays are three separate acts that tell one unique story. Set in San Pere, Louisiana, The Brother/Sister Plays explore various themes including family and identity. They can be enjoyed independently, but it is recommended you attend all three acts.

American Buffalo @ Steppenwolf Theatre

The Steppenwolf Theatre continues it’s 34^th season with David Mamet’s classic American Buffalo. In a cluttered, run-down Chicago junk shop, three small-time crooks plot to steal a valuable coin collection. As the heist unravels, the men’s frustration and paranoia intensify. American Buffalo stars Francis Guinan, Tracy Letts, Patrick Andrews and is directed by ensemble member Amy Morton.

We first mentioned American Buffalo a few months back while we were distributing Steppenwolf’s seasonal brochures. Now, we are doing a full blown poster distribution in support of this exciting new production. Be sure to catch it while you can!

House on Mango Street @ Steppenwolf Theatre

Steppenwolf’s current season is off and running, and their newest production begins next week. Based on the novel by Chicago writer Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street is the touching and humorous story of a young girl growing up in one of Chicago’s culturally diverse neighborhoods. We have begun a distribution targeting youth oriented locations throughout the city. Be sure to keep an eye out for the materials, and make sure to get your tickets for this show today!

Fake @ Steppenwolf

As part of it’s 34th season, Steppenwolf brings an original work from one of its ensemble members to the stage. Fake tells the tale of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle inviting four guests to his home, each of which has a connection to the missing link between ape and man known as the “Piltdown Man”. To support this production, we’ll soon be distributing materials for this all over the city. Fake is written and directed by ensemble member Eric Simonson. Be sure to check it out!

Described as a “bittersweet tale about an American family trying to escape the boundaries of the everyday by harnessing the power of the imagination”, Up is a show that everyone can relate to. Directed by ensemble member Anna D. Shapiro and originally written by Bridget Carpenter, Up was influenced by Lawrence Richard Walters aka “The Lawn Chair Pilot”. In June, we launched a poster and flyer distribution in order promote the show. Be sure to stay after the performance for a post show discussion with members of the Steppenwolf artistic staff.

A while back, we launched a streetmarketing campaign for Steppenwolf’s upcoming production of Art. Now, they are smack dab in the middle of the show’s run. We’re doing another round of promotions for Art, including handbill distribution, but we wanted to remind everyone out there to check out this production. Originally written by Yasmina Reza, and directed by ensemble member Rick Snyder, this is a comedy that you will want to see.

Of Mice and Men @ Steppenwolf Theatre

John Steinbeck’s classic story set during the depression is brought to life on stage by the Steppenwolf for Young Adults series. This production is directed by Michael Patrick Thornton, who starred as John Merrick in Steppenwolf for Young Adults’ production of The Elephant Man. Thornton has also received a Joseph Jefferson Award for his performance in Gift Theatre Company’s production of The Good Thief. Student matinee performances for Of Mice and Men are Tuesday through Friday at 10am, so if you are a teacher, please take note.

The Tempest @ Steppenwolf Theatre

Steppenwolf ensemble member Tina Landau re-imagines Shakespeare’s final magical tale, The Tempest. Ensemble member Frank Galati returns to the stage as Prospero, the revenge driven main character. This is Galati’s first performance at Steppenwolf since The Drawer Boy with John Mahoney in 2001, and it is Steppenwolf’s first Shakespeare production. We are campaigning throughout the city executing poster and flyer distributions in support of the show. The Last Days of Desmond Nani Reese @ Steppenwolf

A sort of mix of sci-fi and burlesque, The Last Days of Desmond Nani Reese is a unique and exciting story. In 2014, an “ethno-femino-dance anthropologist” travels to the post apocalyptic city of L.A. to complete her dissertation on “The History of the World, as Told by Loose Women.” Her last subject is Desmond “Nani” Reese, a once famous stripper who is now a 108 year-old crazy cat lady. Written and performed by Heather Woodbury, Last Days is an entertaining look at outlaw women over the ages. Through poster and flyer distribution, direction is promoting this one-night-only event that you won’t want to miss.

As part of its 2009 season, Steppenwolf presents Art. Written by French playwright Yasmina Reza, Art has been translated into almost 30 languages since it first debuted. Steppenwolf’s production will feature key members of it’s ensemble cast, which will be ever changing throughout the run. This rich characters study profiles three male friends and their views and opinions on art when one of them spends a small fortune on a piece that causes some mixed reactions. Mixing drama and light humor, Art is a unique production well worth seeing.

Young Adults Programming @ Steppenwolf

There is still a big misconception that theater is for older people. Steppenwolf offers a way to cater to young adults by presenting stage productions with casts made up of middle and high school students. These performances are only available for young student audiences, and run Tuesdays through Fridays at 10am. Steppenwolf wrapped up 2008 with a great performance of The Glass Menagerie, and in 2009 they will present Steinbeck’s classic Of Mice and Men. Of course if you don’t happen to meet the criteria for being a student, public performances of the same show are offered to the general public on Saturdays at 11am.

The Seafarer @ the Steppenwolf Theatre

Steppenwolf brings another of Conor McPherson’s stories to life onstage. The Seafarer is a tale set on Christmas Eve in Dublin about a man who unknowingly enters a card game where the stakes are his soul. Bosting an all star ensemble cast including Chicago native John Mahoney, The Seafarer is a must see for those who wish for something different than the typical happy-go-lucky Christmas shows in town this season.

The Seafarer is at the Steppenwolf Theatre December 4th-February 8th.

Dublin Carol @ Steppenwolf Theatre

As part of it’s 33rd season, the Steppenwolf Theatre presents Dublin Carol. Written by Irish playwright Connor McPherson, it tells the story of a man, working at a funeral home whose life has been ruined through alcoholism, coming to terms with his past. The cast includes William Peterson, Stephen Lois Grush, and Nicole Wiesner in her Steppenwolf debut, and is directed by ensemble cast member Amy Morton.
